Who does not have a stock cat? And also does not get error code 420 that your cat is bad? Why me???? I have heard of like one other person that has to reset theres regularly. It does not make sense to me at all. I have a RT cat. I now have a custommaxima stright pipe to try out too. It seems a straight pipe would probably still send me a code though.

I am also getting the knock sensor code as well, are these related?

Any personal recommendations on a ODB2 scanner and data logger for a laptop or a Palm?

Do yourself a big favor, put your stock Cat back on. Trust me, I have been there and done it. I am happier than ever with OEM, with no CEL. I am assuming that you must have a Post Cat sensor, well I have tried 3 different Cats, and only OEM Cat won't give me P0420 error code.

Actually......... my CEL went off tonight! Let's see how long it stays off! I have no emissions here either. I noticed a big power increase when I went WOT adn looked down to see my CEL had gone off. I hope it stays off....

For those ppl who don't have problem with aftermarket Cat, do you have post Cat sensor? like fed emission cars usually have it? and if you do, do you have Y-pipe to go with it? Cuz it seems impossible for cars to have no CEL when you have Y Pipe, straight pipe/aftermarket Cat and your car have post Cat sensor????(unless your sensor is not functioning)

Bascially, you took out all 3 Cats that came with the factory. One main one and 2 pre-cats.

i know that the high-flow carsound cat will pass inspection, it's epa & carb approved. i just don't know if it will pass with a custom exhaust and y-pipe.

it's very hard to beat the 2.5" high-flow carsound cat, epa & carb approved with stainless steel at $97 with shipping.

I have a Warpspeed Metallic Substrate Hi-flow cat.

I replaced my Y-pipe (WS), B-pipe (WS) and the cat all at the same time along with a new rear 02 sensor (from Nissan). The 02 threw an 0702 from the start and I have never been able to get it to clear (going on 3 months ).
Resetting the ECU clears it for a day or 2. I've pulled out the 02 several times and cleaned it but it will throw the code again and again. Anyone know of any solutions? I'm thinking of putting my stock back on.

Had to edit the code # it's was actually a 0702 bad Cat. code.

Thanks,

Boo

Make sure the wiring to the sensor is okay. Nothing pinched, shorted, etc.

i dont know why ud get a code sayin ur cats bad, thats not ur main cat. i have that code and i have a stock cat, the meaning of that code is bank 1 cat converter effiency is low, well obviously the effiency is low, its not there to be efficient so its not ur stock ur main cat u should be lookin at the P0420 code refers to your pre-cat assembley which the y-pipe replaces up to 00' unless urs is a 5th gen cali-spec or 01'. i cahnged my y-pipe a while ago and didnt get the SES light, but when i gutted out the front pre-cat the light went on. there are no 02 sensors after ur main cat for the ECU to know if its workin or not. if u need more info just ask, later.

Depends. If you have a cali spec car, there are no o2 sensors. But on a fed spec, there is an 02 sensor downstream of the cat (i.e. between cat and resonator.

I have the 420 code with a cattman y and rt cat.

But, I started getting that code BEFORE I changed to the rt cat. Don't ask me why.

alright that seems to make a bit more sense, u see mine is a 01' which are all cali-spec so to speak, i didnt know that the other max's had a O2 placed between the cat and the resonator. thnx 4 that info. only problem im gonna have here is emissions whenever that comes around, the SES light in my car wont shut off for long, when i clear it it stays that way for no more then 5min, or 1-2 miles.

Wow..really? I am okay with Stock Cat, Cattman Y and Greddy EVO(don't matter in this case).

and I am 2000 Fed Spec maxima. Maybe try checking the O2 sensors connection???

So, in conclusion, Carsound Cat won't give P0420 Code?..I know other ones will. At least for 5th gen Fed Spec Max!

To clear things up, Nissan ONLY makes Fed Emission max for 2000 Year, all 2001-UP are ALL California Emission--meaning, you will never get P0420 error code due to that there no O2 sensor behind the Main Cat.

And for ppl with 2001-up who have this CEL showing P0420, please CHECK THE TSBs, it has at least 3 TSBs released by Nissan that deal with CEL related to Emission Control system. That goes the same for P0420 error code.

Now, are there anyone with 5th gen Fed Spec Max that have Y-pipe, aftermarket Cat/straight pipe and Cat-back system don't have P0420 error code?

thx

Some antiseize might have gotten on the O2 sensor when you were putting it in causing it to give you that code. Heard of it happening before with other people. Cleaning it with some electrical cleaner might help.

When I got my Warpspeed parts (Y, mettalic cat, B) there was quite a lot of antiseize in the holes for the sensors. Had to wipe some off.

Going on 4 months now without a code at all. Runs perfectly..

My SES (mine says service engine soon, not check engine soon) light came on again!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
So I pull my codes, i get 3 codes
knock sensor
420
knock sensor
Same thing as 9 months ago!

Anyone else have luck with this?

I have a 97 SE 5 speed fed spec with old school Cattman SS ypipe, RT Cat, and greddy catback.

I have a test pipe I can install..... the 420 code seems to be for my missing precats though. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Maybe my future JWT ecu will help

I have a Cattman Y-pipe = RT Cat (that has gutted it's self) = and Cattman B-pipe + factory muffler.

2000 Fed spec Maxima.

I called RT and they said that the reason my car gutted my cat is because of when my car was detonating form running too lean with my SC.
RT said that the basket inside the RT cat is made of ceramic and if it gets hit or back fires or detonates it will break that basket and then once it is loose it will come apart and pushed out of your exhaust in just a few days.

I have the same 0420 code all the time also.

RT offer to make me a custom cat with a metal basket for over $200. I am looking for other options.

There's a very good chance your cel will come on. 95-96 have a hard time with the cat moniter, so the ecm almost never checks the cat. 97+ doesn't have that 'problem.'

I have a str8t pipe and never ever got a CEL for that. I do get occasional CELs but thats when something is wrong, like my EGT probe blowing off throwing all kinds of codes but that was the problem.
