5 speed conversion bugs
5 speed conversion bugs
Guys I did my 5 speed conversion a couple weeks ago and im loving it...
Everything works like my Cruz control, and I even got me a 5 speed ECU in there....on an auto harness...
Every couple days my CEL comes on and gives the same damn code... park/neutral
I rest the computer and it will come back every 2 days or so, sometimes the same day....
some one please help....i don't know what to do since the park neutral switch is not being used since i don't have an auto anymore

What year did the manual transmission come from? If it came from a 99, the pins on the park/neutral position switch are reversed.

You are probably right. Did you "hard" wire the auto to manual wires on the park/neutral switch? If you did, you probably got two wires mixed up. Look in the Haynes manual, it has a good write-up on what wires are which.....

Will do... Thanks man

Ok, here is "my" write-up on how to properly wire up the park/neutral position switch.
The following will work on all 95-98 manual transmission conversions.
1. Looking at the front of the connector on the transmission side of the harness, the pin numbers are:
1 2
3 4
2. Looking at the front of the connector on the ECU side of the harness for the automatic connector, the pin numbers are:
3 9 8 7
4 5 6 X
3. For the neutral position, you want to wire up pin 1 on the transmission side to pin 3 on the ECU side. And wire up pin 3 on the transmission side to pin 6 on the ECU side.
4. For the reverse position, you want to wire up pin 2 on the transmission side to pin 3 on the ECU side. And you want to wire up pin 4 on the transmission side to pin 5 on the ECU side.
With this setup, I have working reverse lights and no park/neutral position ECU CEL. I will try to get wire colors when I go out to my car a little bit later.

HAHA!! You don't need the 5spd harness huh? Works just like a factory 5spd huh?
Suck it

Oh yeah , you know amercian cars...about how fast would a ranger truck be with just a 5.0 motor swap ?

Well anything can be ghetto rigged together, but personally I wouldn't wanna rip my dash apart and risk splicing the wrong wires.

A 5.0 from what? The 94-95 Mustang 5.0's had 215hp/285tq, and the Cobra's had 240hp/300+tq...but Rangers are heavy as hell and have that sh!tty truck suspension (live axle i believe). If he swaps a Cobra 5.0 in there and is 5spd, you would still destroy him easily. He'd need to get alot of bolt ons to keep up with you. That is in straight line, let's not even talk about autocross. When you start boosting don't waste your time.
yeah dont dont worry boost is coming soon
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 5 speed conversion bugs
no.. the wires are set up right... since the reverse lights work..
I the issue I think is that the ECU can't figure out why the car is NEVER in Nuetral. There probably are more then the 1&2 pin on the autoharness that relates to Nuetral. If so then they need to be connected to the loose nuetral switch wires...

In the Haynes manual, it is also stating another connector only with pins 1 and 2. It says that there should be continuity between those as well. Why would he throw the CEL with the same setup I have that isn't throwing a CEL? All I know is that a manual ECU will solve most of this lol, given that the wires are PROPERLY wired up....

Can you take a picture of the set-up that you have. I still don't think something is hooked up right. If you did what I said to do, you should not have a CEL. My set-up, and my other buddy who did the 5-speed swap (Yonas), do not have any CELs. Email me or post the pictures here.....

But i think what you told us to do work...i went to the track last night and raced...one of the wires must have gotten lose because the light came on at the track, but when i shook and tuged on the wires this morning to see if they were conected....and started the car there was no check engion light
and thats with out me restarting the ecu too
im going to try to tape down the wires really good and see if that does the trick, i'll keep u updated
Alright, Its been 4 days after doing all the connections...and I just wanted to add that it WORKS.... its been over a week and no CEL
( knock on wood )
Man it feels so good, its like its been a 5 speed all its life...Thanks everyone for your help, and thanks sooo much to chaz, the guy that made everything posable

My best with an auto was 10.1
My best with a 5 speed 9.5 ( I only had the car a 5 speed for 2 weeks ) I know for a fact i can get lower times, I was just very nurves, it was the first time at the track with a stick, let alone only having it for two weeks
9.5 isent bad at all, thats about good for mid 14s, but with my set up ( Intake, Y pipe , Cat back ) I wanna be low 14s

So, what exactly was the problem to begin with? Was one of the wires not properly hooked up or something?

Sorry to bring up an old thread but i really need to know the colors of the wires for the PN and reverse wiring. The connectors on my car have already been cut so i do not know which pin goes where. Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Justin
