Possible odometer rollback!

Been lurking for awhile here. great forums.

about a year ago I purchased a 97 se 5spd with with 80k on it.
Car drives great and have had no problems (with the exception of o2 sensor)

The car has just hit 100k in the last two weeks and get this, If you look very closely at the 1 it seems like you can make out a fingerprint on it!

Carfax didnt report any possible rollback. But then again there was only one owner before me.(purchased from a dealer though)

Does the ecu on my car record the mileage? I know it got an analog odometer but the ecu might still keep track of this stuff right?

I talked with a mechanic at my local dealership and he said it didnt keep track.

Thanks In advance

sorry, the ECU does not keep track.

It's always a toss up buying a used car. Your best bet is checking the condition, wear and tear as thoroughly as possible.

are you sure that's a finger print? eve if, it does not mean it was rolled back. I still don't see how you can spot a finger print on the odometer!

i wouldn't worry that much
if it was rolled back, you can't prove it, nor can you do anything about it at this point..

just enjoy the ride

i don't think you can roll back the odometer by moving it with your finger ... plus, i've opened up my gauge cluser plenty of times and it's possible that i touched the odometer ... if the carfax report comes back pretty normal, then don't bother with it

Thanks for the quick replys guys.

Hehe I didnt think someone actually rolled back the odemetor with their finger :-). I was thinking that it was left while someone had it ripped apart.

Oh well too bad the ecu doesnt keep track.

carfax wont necessarily show an odometer rollback unless the idiot rolled it back to a lower amount of miles than it had at the last inspection

actually,
i think you can

once i had my cluster apart, i could have set any milage i want..

if i go in there again... i'm going to set myself at 999,999 miles and drive one mile to see what happens and take a pic

the digital odometers are different though, i think..

Why worry about changing the odo? You can always find a speedo at the yard with lower mileage ;-)
