I usually just throw it in the middle of my windshield, but i've seen them placed in various places, if radar is my main concern (not laser) would putting it in the corner of the windshield by steering wheel cut performance?

At the highest point of your windshield below the tint. Basically right below your rear view mirror. The higher it is, the sooner the signal you will get.

mine is setting on the dash

right at the bottom of the windshield. It still works well and it is not blocking any view and is out of the way.

does it really matter? I mean radar bounces all around, so would it matter if its mouted right under the tint or mouted on the dash?

Yes it does matter. Tests have proven the higher the better. Even Valentine recommends it up high for a spot.

Why would a radar detector have to be below the tint? I could kinda see it for laser, but laser doesn't spread very far from its intended target. Radar shouldn't be affected by a darker tint.

Most tint these days has METAL in it to help reflect the rays better and keep it from turning purple. It DRASTICALLY cuts down in the signal of the radar.

I have mine right above the rear view mirror. I pluged it in to the map light and the left map light button is the on/ off.
