Design Engineering Cryogenic Intake System

Saw this in the new issue of Modified Magazine. It's supposed "freeze" the air that passes through the intake tube which lets colder air go into the engine which yields better power gains. It won the Best Performance-Racing Product at the 2002 SEMA Show.

They have a 3" intake tube for it, which should fit 95-03 Maximas. Maybe they'll post dyno plots soon though. Who knows if this is another one of those Tornado Air gimics.

Hmm interesting...seems to be similar to nitrous since you have to refill the CO2 tank plus it has an arming switch and WOT switch...but you will definitely not gain as much power as nitrous...I'll pass on this one.

I just got that issue too and I checked the DEI site and their retailers and there is no pricing as of yet...it looks interesting sinc eit can be applied for both NA and boost. NX has had something similar for intercoolers as well that uses both CO2 and NO2.

EDIT: I don't think its a gimmick so to say, but I also only think boosted cars will see the most agins from this....alhtough it should reduce intake temps by a lot in NA cars as well.

It looks to be like nitrous, meaning, that it needs to always be refilled and is limited to a few runs.....

Still OK for N/A class?

This would still be legal to use in an N/A class, wouldn't it? It's technically not a power adder. You'd probably have a hell of a time with the tech's though, trying to convince them you aren't on the bottle.

Thats not an AWIC

And really, nitrous works much better than this.

I read that the new f150 lightning will have something like this in principle- they use the air conditioning system to supercool water which is dumped into the intercooler under WOT. With the lightning's power, this must give huge gains. The nice thing about this is that while not available all the time, the cooled water recharges.

yeah the NX N-tercooler system does that except with nitrous....I think one of their turbo'd Civics supposedly made 30+hp with it alone. Saw a WRX with one last week...looks cool too with the solenoids just sitting on the IC!

I tink there is also an article buried somewhere on autospeed.com in which they make a "poor man's intercooler 'cooler' thingamajig" for one of their project cars

Thanks Greg. You've saved me alot of design time

Nevermind. Too much $$ for just the intake setup. Summit Racing lists the tank for $369 and intake tube for $149. That's approx $77/hp for N/A operation @ 90deg, $115/hp at 60deg. Other better mods for the money first.

I am sure you could use any aftermarket intake tube and just drill a hole in it instead of buying theirs which is expensive.

Yes but you still need their kit to get the special bulb which provides the cold charge. And I can't tell if the CO2 stops there of if it must pass back out again e.g. drill 2 holes.

And the big cost is that $369 tank!

A 20hp shot of nitrous would be a better choice.
