Today I dropped my third tranny (PRPmax) and took it all apart. Took 3 hours as one Mardigrasmax told me it would take. We had three sergeons working on it (Ramius, Jonas and myself). How do you use this precison gauge to measure the freeplay of the differential with no shims in stalled? I will link three pics. Any of you guys answer this question for me? thanks. Cumalot, Delio you see this can you help me please. I know I have to install the case cover back on and torque it to 14ft lbs but where do I place the gauge is my question.

What in the world happened to that gear?

Did you check the motorvate site? He did a tranny rebuild and went over the preload. Maybe he's got some info up there that can help you out. My guess is it's the case movement while you torque it down that your measuring. To much movement means to much preload. Not enough means it's to lose.

you put the dial indicator plunger against the part you need to measure free play, set the needle to Zero and then push and pull the tranny part in and out and watch how many .000 of an inch it moves and that will tell you what the freeplay is

The tranny has to be assembled and the gauge set on the case with the pointer resting on the inner bearing race, but for gods sake, get a new ring gear!

Oh if your going ot be using a dial indicator then there supposed to be another part that goes with the guage. Its like a flexible rod thats attached to a vise grip or a magnetic base. Clamp that part to a solit part of the tranny.

I got another complete transmission with 23K that I just bought, just trying to see how do measure the deflection of the bearing in there. Motorvate skipped a bunch of steps and he just says to rig up the gauge and thats it and measure the deflection that totally lost me since I have never done this. I am trying to find the correct answer since I am not the only one that will be doing this. PRPMax and Ramius also dont have a clue how to do it. Once I get the gauge and put the case back on then Ill understand. This is not hard just time consuming.

Thanks everyone for the information.

I dont know what happened to that gear Ill tell you that much, all I hard was a tack tack tack and four days ago it got loud. We went to the motorvate site and we are still like this but I think we have the concept down. Ill be ordering a gauge like that and see how we can figure that one out.
