Hey guys, I own ‘99 i30 aka ‘99 maxima. Therefore I have decided to ask the most knowledgeable people about the car. My question is this: my rear brakes are done. Should I get after market or originals? If I should get after market then which company and has anyone used the before and what is the verdict based on experience. Keep in mind everything is stock on the car.

I will always put OEM Nissan pads on the front. As far as rear pads, I will be changing those in three weeks and I will probably go with Raybestos Quiet Stops since I have had a friend use them on his max and I have also heard good things about them here.

 

what classifies as "done".. if it's just your rear brakes, you should get some oem pads and get the rotors machined.

they are used like 20%, if that, in overall braking so not worth spending much money on.

if you want to get xdrilled rotors or something like that check out www.southwestautoworks.com for some decent prices on oem size brembo replacements..

 

Did you buy the tool for the rear pistons yet? I haven't gotten around to it, thus far I've only done my fronts. I can't remember the mileage, but it was something like 57k or so--when I pulled out the pads they were about 65% worn, not even close to requiring replacement. I put OEM's in and forgot to reinstall one set of shims. Did not turn the rotors either. Those bad-boys have never squealed since I changed the pads! That's why I'll always swear by OEM's. It's a Maxima, I don't want to spend a million $ on calipers, rotors, pads, when the steering feels like s*** anyway. If I wanted kick-a** braking, better steering and handling, I would have bought an Olds Alero!

 

You don't need a tool for the rear pistons. A pair of needle-nose pliers works just as easy as the tool, and they're probably in your tool box already. Just use the tips of the pliers in the grooves of the piston, and twist clockwise to turn the piston in. It doesn't take any force at all to do it. Piece of cake.

Depends on what kind fo driving you're doing, I guess, and if you tend to warp your OEM rotors.

 

Nissan Pads are actually pretty good. If you liked the way they performed in your car, then put them back in.

There are plenty other pads out there to chose from as well. You could save a few $$ going aftermarket as well.

 

go to your local auto parts store.. get the lifetime warranty pads for like $20 ... $20 life.. just can't beat it

 

That's what I'm doing in the spring. Was supposed to do it last year but I got lazy.

99i30LIMITED: Try OEM in the rear and good performance pads in the front. In the fronts I'm using carbon metallic pads. The stopping power is unreal.
