Instant Heat
Instant Heat
Why haven't the car manufacturers put this into cars?
It take, what seems to be, forever for a car to warm up and put out decent heat.
My friend has a Tahoe, he wired up an inverter, and has two heaters (one ceramic on the center hump, and a small slim heater on the dash on the drivers side pointed at the windshield). His truck is wired for remote start too. So when he gets home at night, he turns the heaters on, so all he has to do in the morning is hit the remote starter, wait 5 minutes, and he has a warm truck.
Would be real nice on these +5F degree days !

Mercedes has it, comes with the cooled seating package in the S series. It's electric suppliment heat. You start the car and warm air will come out of the heater instantly. Once the engine is up to temp it runs off the heater core just as any other car.
I'm not sure about any others thou..

It is surprising that at least the big BMW's or Mercedes haven't come up with that yet. Apparently they think heated seats, shifters, and steering wheels are enough.

ford people? Help.
I just wish it was +5 around here, I havent seen a morning above zero for a lil bit. I have seen those ceramic heaters that plug into the cigarette lighter, and are designed to reach to the back seat to give them extra heat...maybe this is an idea. Although, I would be worried about anything getting into the heater box, and catching fire (unattended)
Great, all you need...something else to ooze out of a Ford
Never heard of it...

someone did... I thought a year ago Ford unveiled a "gel wrap" for the exhaust system that captured heat and held it as long as overnight, so the next morning you started the car and got "instant heat" from the gel wrap until the engine had time to warm up.

Some guy invented a system that basically used a big thermose (sp?) to hold the radiator coolant over night. You would have heat instantly in the morning and it would be better for the car because it did not have to run cold. I read about it a year or two ago, I guess they never got it put into production. It was fairly heavy and expensive compared to a remote starter. With remote starters being relitivly cheap I don't see why there is any incentive to develop an instant heat system. Us stick owners are just out of luck.
I think he used a ceramic heater, like the ones you buy for the house (the small cube looking one.

hey 2dmax, what kind of electric heater did he have? it would be nice not having to wait a minute for my heat to start working. maybe i'm just spoiled with the hot florida summers and can't stand 30s.

Many older cars used electric heat.. Corvairs, VW bugs.. several other rear-engine cars did also. they did have the ductwork running up from the back, but since the cars were air-cooled, they didn't have a heater core to warm air, so they had to use electric heat.
that would be so cool to have a fast heat heater. it takes like 10min for my maxima to get remotly warm in this 5degree weather. and i have leather!! the heated seats dont do sh*t. by the time it kicks in and heats your seat, the rest of the car is warm already anyways. plus in the winter with my jacket on i cant even tell if they are on
