Transmission problem : please HELP me decide

Was a proud owner of Maxima '94 GXE until recently when the transmission started malfunctioning and I fear is almost broke now.
AAMCO say it's an internal problem and may cost anywhere near $1400 to fix it.
What should I do?
Should I get it fixed, maybe at a small shop for lesser/AAMCO with a warranty (or) try to sell/trade-in. I've heard warranties have given people nightmares and I'm not even sure if my maxima run's enough to recover my investment.
Checked the Blue book value for 120000 miles, excellent condition. $3000 trade-in value, $4000 private party value.
How much can I except to sell without actually getting it fixed?

Please help me decide.
Thanks for your time.

Most people will tell you to get a 5 speed ... from a junk yard ... and its not a bad idea. You must ... go ... on ...

Thanks a bunch, Optimus1.
Would you know much would be a good deal for parts + labor to replace transmission?

don't 94's have the VE in 'em? if so, then definitely convert to a 5-speed. try to find a tranny at a junkyard or somewhere.

he has a GXE so he has the VG.

IMO $1400 for an auto tranny job is a decent price, but what about the warranty?? if they go over $2000, goto a smaller shop...you can usually muster out $1200-1500 with a 6 month warranty!

Thank you all. Just one question for now though, are you telling me to get the 5-speed manual or automatic?
I see 4-speed auto in the factory specs.

Re: Transmission problem : please HELP me decide

I would advise staying away from Aamco. One other option would be to pick up a used tranny for cheap from a wrecker's... it could end up lasting you quite a while too....
