transmission problems

I have a 1993 Maxima and i recently started experiencing that while
the car's transmission is changing gears, it does a little violent
(not smooth) jerking and i thought i better show it to a professional
before it goes worse. I took it to Cottmans and i let the guy test
drive it with me he says: using his terms "a bang" between gears 1 to
2 and 2 to 3 and back ward too.

he said he will plug his computer into it and let me know, i went home
and then got a call from him saying i need a drop resistor for further
testing and that will cost me 100 dollars and that this "drop" might
solve the problem.

any ideas guys and what is this drop resistor thing, has anyone ever
had such situations. please enlighten me on this, i feel like the
cottman guy may want to swindle me into more repairs. please write all
you know about the problem, can i trust this repair shop?

the drop resistor (i think) bypasses the solenoid smooth transition, by making it shift hard. I think it used to verify if a solenoid is bad or not ... try a search, and or goto 2nd gen forum with the same question ...

The dropping resistor is in line between the computer and the pressure control solenoid. It's malfunction will absolutely cause harsh shifts. However, not diagnosing it myself, it is hard to say what is causing your problem.
