What To Do With Juttering Brakes?

When braking somewhat hard my brakes seem to jutter. I was wondering does that normally mean new pads or both pads and rotors are needed. Also can I get EBC brake pads for a 2002 because on tirerack.com it didn't come up for the 2002 model year. Any suggestions please let me know. I dont want to put alot of money into brakes but i need something new because the stock setup just isn't doing it anymore.

warped rotors or unevenly worn pads... get the rotors machined and change the pads.. $100 for everything.

You may not have the typical warped rotor. You may have what I have. I have heat stressed rotors. Under normal braking, the car brakes TOTALLY normal. However, when I have to brake from a higher speed, and the rotors build up heat, the temporarily heat warp. So when I have to brake from say 80-0, or 120-80, the rotors will feel warped. However, soon afterwards, and every other time, there is no warpage.

If you look at my rotors, they aren't pretty. You can see various signs of heat damage. Check yours.

Is there any good way to tell from a visual inspection if you have "heat stressed rotors".. I seem to be having the exact same symptoms, and need a good excuse to get some slotted/crossdrilled for my birthday

Next time your next to a Porche or S500 Benz take a look at what type of rotors are on the car.

I really don't think high end car like that would come with rotors that crack.

Any rotor can crack under extreme conditions.

I dont know about Benz, but the Porsche rotors are cast with the holes in them. That's a whole different ball game than drilling holes in a blank rotor.

Your brake jutter IS covered by your 36000 mi warrantee. Nissan willcut the rotors. But I got to warn you. The rotors are crap. You'll get several thousand miled adn be replacing them at your expense.

Actually, this usually happens if the pads are operating above their intended heat range (e.g. non performance pads)... Rotors can glow and still work provided the pads can take it.

WRONG.......12,000 on rotors.

Get the Drilled ones from Stillen, they work great. I have no regrets, other than wasting $80 on having my OEM ones turned, and new pads put on. I should have done it eariler.

Yes, you can use pads in a temp range that will still operate on a rotor that is glowing orange. However, the stock rotors can and are easily damaged by hard braking. Don't believe me? Take out your 4th gen and do a lap or two at an autox track, or heck, even just do some 80-10km/h braking as hard as possible without locking up the tires or engaging ABS. I bet that after doing this a couple times, you'll find signs of heat stress on the rotors. If I get a chance, I'll take some pics of mine when I can. There are minute little cracks everywhere, and discolouration.

Actually Padsy 02 6sp is wrong about the 12,000 miles. It's 36,000. I can prove it, or you can just call Nissan's 800 number to verify. The dealer charged me and Nissan paid me back for their misiterpretation of the warrantee.

Sorry... my stock 11" brakes are long gone

I only said this because I had a frozen caliper on my MKIII Supra and the rotor was glowing red... I just got another caliper, sanded the pads (non stock) and reinstalled... No harm to rotor or pad.

But given this was on a different car.

I just went and checked my brakes and checked the picture that is provided on motorvate and they look nothing the same..

Here is a heat stressed rotor:

*courtesy of motorvate.ca

My brakes looking nothing like that.

I also did a finger test, where you run your nail down the side of the disk to check for grooves. (No grooves from mine)

That's exactly how my rotors look, except I have a pinch more discolouration.

What that is is called heat checking; minute surface cracks that are not abnormal and do not affect the performance of the rotors.

Exactly, as long as there is transfer film on the rotor, which this rotor has.

My rotors are discoloured, anywhere from purple to brown.
