Beefy transmission?
Hi guys
I just got a tranny and was wondering if any of you higher power guys have done anything to beef up your 5 speeds? I know cryo-freezing is an option, I was wondering if anyone has done/tried anything else? I want to beef it up before I put my new motor in, pistons and rods finally shipped! I hate pulling my tranny - Any ideas?
Thanks!

Ofcourse a stronger tranny with better gears is gonna cost most but its worth it in the long run. The turbo makes the gears go by so much faster (obviosly) but 1st is basically usless. Id personally throw in a 1st gear that wouls reach a good 50mph so it would actually be of some use in this case. 2nd-5th is all on u Nigel but a 30mph jump in 2nd and 35mpg gain in every other gear would be more taylored to the powerband of the turbo is you would actually be able to make use of the power. In 5th is would top off anywere from 185-190mph (im sure u got the power to get there
) So u also have room to shorten any of the gears. As u know its ur call, but thats what id do in this case. As for beefing the tranny up, ur guess on what to do is as good as mine im just throwin gearing up in here.

If your doing that you need to get a custom straight cut dog gear set made. Unfortunately it will cost you around $3000-5000. Otherwise eventually you will be breaking tranny's. That assuming you don't baby it though.

And if using the dog ring gear set you will unfortunately have to pull your tranny every 3,000 miles or so and replace the dog rings.. Sweeeeeet..

I know you weren't talking about the motor. In his post he mentioned that his pistons and rods were finally shipped. I was wondering what kind he got. I don't know of any pistons or rods in a transmission, so I assumed he meant the motor.

i dont know if i am considered a "higher power guy" to you ....
but nonetheless, beefed up tranny's are a good thing, cryo treating is a good place to start and not too expensive once you have your tranny opened up and gear stacks removed (And individual gears pressed off if you wish)! do you have LSD yet? if not, do that too - its good and makes turbo power more forgiving, when you spin, you actually go somewhere at the same time, and don't jump lanes on the interstate as easily - granted I still spin @ 70
gear ratios are fun, but a lott more work than you may think - i know this only from having installed them , and i had no warning
knock on wood, so far my stuff is holding up much better than a stock tranny.

Well that is a good point, but if I were to get my gear ratios changed, id for sure get a long first gear. The normal 1st on the max is basically usless with the turbo or SC, id make it small enough to run up to atleast 50mph if not possibly a little more just to make use of the gear. Same with second Id do atleast another 35-40mph just in that gear and keep the rest in short inreases or 30mph to harness the top end. Might be horrible on a N/A car but with a spool of a turbo, calculated gear ratios will give you quite an edge. Plus is just cool to take 1st to over 50+ mph and have power to spare.
I got mine cryo'd. It blew eventually anyway with a ACT clutch, but for what its worth- that transmission lasted over a year that was cryo'd. After I put a non-cryo'd gear in there, it blew again but this time less then a month.
