Five speed conversion ???
Five speed conversion ???
I have located a local source for the parts i will need.
Will any 95-99 manual tranny work?
I have a 97 GLE.
Do I need to get a different ECU or not?
I was under the impression I would not but want to make sure so I cab buy everything at once.

Actually I think you might even be able to fit up to a 2001 5spd tranny. Someone here mention before that the 5th gen should have the same tranny and it should bolt right up.
If anyone knows this to be true OR false let me know.

Will any 95-99 manual tranny work? Yes, on the 99s you have to use different wires for your reverse.
I have a 97 GLE.
Do I need to get a different ECU or not? If you dont want a CEL get the manual ECU. Or if you want to upgrade to a JWT ECU get a 96 Manual one.

WIth a 97 SE 5spd ECU, you will not get a CEL, but then you can't upgrade to a JWT.

guess you cant have it all huh. well, I was thinking of getting a 96 ecu for my 97 and JWT it and to solve the CEL problem I was going to remove the light from the dash and relocate the CEL bulb somewhere out of sight like in the fuse panel. That way I can still diagnose when I need to plus I dont have to stare at the damn light all the time. What do you think?

Then you just flip the switch when you need to check codes.

You'll have a CEL forever, but hey - that's part of the pain that's worth the pleasure.
If you want to sell the car someday, then buy a 97 SE MT ECU at that time, and get rid of the CEL. Then sell teh JWT for $500 bones.

Found this in PA off car-parts.com :

Look at the April specials for Allentown or Hazelton. $30 transmission from April 21-26. Think you could actually get it for that price?
