Yup.....I used a big as$ dead blow hammer (rubber mallet) and a 6X rivet gun to flatten it all out. Just about perfect as far as the ring goes....important I assume since the crank position sensor uses that. The ring itself was not altered so it should be fine. The small gouges i just jewlers filed out.

modified thermostat??

I reduced the temp by 10 deg. Put a small metal pill under the shaft, it lengthens it and causes it to open sooner.

My OBD II gizmo measures accurate coolant temp so its easy to monitor.

do you have a write up or pics, I'm not quite sure what a metal pill is.

You have that much faith that we won't see freezing temps again this spring? :wall:

I hope not Eric but never can tell. It will just stay underground if it does freeze.

Street Reeper I will do a write up here once I confirm it does what I want. I call it a pill. Initially I cut off the end of a 10-32 screw, but then our locksmith came in last week and had a whole toolkit full of these pins for door locks so when I told him what I was doing he gave me a bunch of different lengths so now I can experiment a little more if I don't get the temp I want.

I say pill but its just a small round piece of metal that will sit in the hole the shaft of the thermostat sits in and makes it sit a little higher.

The inside of the thermost is basically a wax substance that pushes down on the shaft and opens the thermostat when a set temp is reached, this little piece of metal just makes it open sooner. It could be made of any type of material as long as it will take the temp and its the right size to fit in the shaft hole.

Do you do this every year? Do you notice a significant increase in the cooling capability of the system?

Sounds like a good idea to do a 80/20 water/antifreeze mix for the warmer/racing months.

Yes, I did it last year, did not notice any difference because I had no way of monitoring. but it does give a little piece of mind

Water Wetter does not recommend just pure water because it could freeze with the A/C on even in the summer.

They also state that the more coolant you use the less effective the Water Wetter is so I just put in the minumum.

Do you think it could cause problems with the water pump? Doesn't the pump rely on the antifreeze for lubrication as well?

Water Wetter is supposed to improve heat transfer, reduce cyl head temp, reduce rust, corrosion and electrolysis, clean and lubricate pump seals etc etc

At least thats what they advertise. Most racers I know don't use any antifreeze at all just water wetter.

I've used water wetter before. I guess I just don't know how well it would provide to functions that antifreeze is supposed to. Guess time will tell.

By most racers, do you mean guys like us, or guys with "race cars". I can't imagine going from no antifreeze to half antifreeze every year is a good thing for a daily driver.

Eric most racers I know are guys like us, I don't know too many guys that trailer. What I try and do is put in 1 litre of antifreeze in the spring and keep the other 3 litres from the jug until fall, then drain out 3 litres and put it in and its sufficiently strong enough for the winter. I try to minimize the work as much as possible.

One thing I do though is take off the underpanels when I do it to minimize all the stuff that they catch. I took them both off yesterday because I flushed the transmission and installed a cooler as well and it sure makes working in there a lot easier.

Thanks for all the info. I'm due to change the coolant, so I think I'll give this a shot.

I use the Toyota Red also, not only is it red like water wetter but I think it has better protection for aluminum etc by the absence of borates and nitrates, I think thats what they are called. It also looks prettier.

Well, I've got a case of generic prestone sitting in my garage...I assumed that would do the trick.

Although...If I could have prettier coolant... ;)
