SC Max VS. Turbo Max

So Sunday I'm crusing down the highway headed to my family's for Easter. I'm enjoying my Burger King when all the sudden a custom blue Maxima come flying up right behind me.

Takes me a moment, but I realize its on_alert, who I had just met a few days prior and got to check out his car!

We weave in and out of traffic for a moment waiting for a clearing, and then take off. We never were side be side, I just followed him the whole time.

Every time he would gun it he'd jump away from me quickly, even when I anticipated that he would. However, as I got closer to the redline (full boost) I would slowly catch up. We went through this 4 or 5 times! It was clearly obvious that he gets into real power before I did.

He's running 4psi (with boost spikes to 7psi he said!) and desperatly needs to be tuned. He also said that he wasn't quite going all out, which I believe because I never though it would be that close if he was. I'm at 6psi (stock pully) and could stand tuning as well.

We're going to dyno some day soon together, then he's going to take it to the track...should be fun.

Durning this whole thing I started to hear a flapping under the hood. Never lost boost, but got me concerned, although not concerned enough to stop. Turns out the belt frayed a tad. I think I lost another rib. Time for a new one.

Street racing =

Wow, 3 psi spike is a lot considering he's only pushing 4 psi.

Truth be told, I don't like street racing at all...but I've wanted to run his car for compairson since I've seen it...and I just couldn't turn down that chance.

He tried to explain his problem to me. Something along the lines of the boost controler was not set during a WOT run and it should have been...etc. I'm no turbo expert. He said he's not concerned, because 7psi is still reasonable and he'll fix the BC before he ups the boost.

To tell you the truth, I would have done the same if I were in your shoes.

So much talk about SC vs. TC... with no real world results for the Maximas.

Hmmmmm...... I'm not familiar with how his BC works, but the SBC i-D and AVC-R doesn't need to be WOT to get set. 3 psi spike at 10+ psi could prove fatal..... for the engine.

Yes it would have been. Although he's talking about building an engine this summer.

Hopefully he'll see this post and fill in the details, because I don't know jack about boost controlers. My boost controler is that black round thing under the hood.

who needs Turbo vs Supercharger fights, when the Turbo guys can't even get along with themselves thank god no one else made a supercharger for the maxima, because the board would have to branch off into a forcedinduction.maxima.org because the ego's wouldn't be big enough to fit on one board

it wasn't in reponse to your thread. It was in response to Kev's comment about Turbocharger vs Supercharger with no results. I was saying who needs those when the turbo guys can't even get along and no one has even raced each other yet.

Gottcha.

Newman (on_alert) is really cool. I'm still amazed at the amount of planning and work that he did. Its really all top notch stuff. He's going to dyno soon and I'll either go with or dyno as well. Then we hit the track!

I'm pretty sure that was Maxstilln. Jeremy's been talking to me for a while now about the SC. Pretty legit shop he's dealing with, so we'll see how it turns out.

how many ribs have you lost? I was running on 5 ribs for couple months. I think there is a belt alignment issue in your car and that's why it wobbles on the idler pulley.

you only have few hundred miles on the SC, right?

where does the belt sit on the idler pulley?

I know I lost one. I may have lost another, but I don't think so now. I have to get under there and check. Idler pully doesn't wobble at all...the tension pully was making contact with the tension pully bracket, but I just moved it away a hair with a washer and its been fine since.

Yes, but this isn't an alignment problem. I left the belt loose initially because I didn't want to "force" anything into running straight. Well, after about a week the belt broke-in and loosened more, allowing it to hop off the pully a bit. This caused me to loose a rib. I put it back on there and its been fine since. I'm sure this latest fraying problem is either cause by, or remnants (sp?) of loosing the first rib.
