Underdrive Pulley: Torque Spec

Hello all,

A quick question, what is the normal torque setting for installing UDP from UR/RVM/Definitive?

Will it be allright to torque it to say.... 90 pounds?
If it's not, can you tell me what might happen?

The reason why I asked was because I just get the pulley installed and it was torque to 90 lbs-ft,but I remember seeing the spec is much higher (like 150?).

Let me know,

Armand

This is strange

The documentation for installing RVM/UR pulley is 146/140 ft.lbs. I checked with Haynes and they stated 50 ft.lbs, plus additional 60 degrees.

Interesting.

At any rate, my pulley is tightened to 90ft.lbs and it's been holding fine for a week (100+ pull, etc.).

I recommend to people: just get it as tight as you can!

I agree on that based on what I read. Even the mechanic (he is a well-known Maxima mechanic here at the .org) told me that 90 is enough.

I did not believe him first, but after reading the numbers...I know that 90 is good enough (after driving, it probably will loosen up a bit, to, say 80 or 70 ft.lbs, which is still safe).

How is the pulley? Do you notice a difference in acceleration at all? Is it worth the money?

150 is about right.

I am stating the facts that there are two sources who said it would be in the range of 50 to 85.

The instruction sheets on UR/RVM stated the figure to be close to 150.
Usually I trust those instructions, but looking at the stock spec in addition to other sources, 150 is on the high side.

50 to 85 is nowhere close to enough. I don't have my FSM here with me, but I can check it when I get home.

Did you notice how tight it comes on there from the factory? I'd say well more than 150ft-lbs!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Underdrive Pulley: Torque Spec

I notice my mpg is improving.....

No, really....the mpg figure is better with the pulley. I know for sure that I spent more gas with the stock pulley when I go WOT or accelerating, but not this time.

Averaging 27 mpg from NYC to Milwaukee with a lot of 90mph+ emergency lane change and cruising at 80mph. 100 is not really uncommon figure, especially on the I-80 crossing Pennsylvania.

The car seem to pick up rev really well, especially in the 2000-5000 range. I installed the Budget Y-pipe as well, so the sweet spot my intake (Stillen) gave me at 3k is extended all the way to 5500.

My low end is kinda suck though...I could notice that in city driving, especially at my favorite 2k mark (60mph) here in Milwaukee (50mph speed limit).

You are right about the factory setup, Jeff did have to torch my bolt to get it off.

I look at my Service Manual when I get home as well, I almost forgot I have it....

Torque Spec: Final Argument and a case for RVM/UR Instuctions

Have FSM for 97 Maxima in front of me. It's covered on the page EM-30 (Engine Mechanical), under timing chain installation section,

Torque Spec: 29-36 ft-lb WITH additional 60 degrees to 66 degrees after that.

So, estimating based on my experience with wheel lug nuts, tightening the bolt up to 60 degrees will increase the torque spec to around 50 lb-ft.

Now, who wants to bring this case to RVM? You RVM guys are having wear problems and oil leaking, and the guy from RVM told you that you guys overtighten the bolt. Well, the factory's spec is around 50 ft-lb, BUT THEIR INSTRUCTION SHEET STATED 146 ft-lbs.

Ah-HA!

Another vouch for Jeff at Maximum Tuning. I should believe you in the first place that 90 is enough.
