A New Way to Clean Windows...

I just remembered something my dad told me while I was cleaning out the interior of my mom's car. An interesting way to clean your windows...

You simply need some newspaper and some Windex or whatever you use to clean your windows normally, but a mix of water & vinegar works even better. You clean like normal, only this seems to work better than standard paper towels and stuff.

Dunno if any of you have ever heard of using that kind of stuff, but WOW...really gets the job done.

And to think my grandma came up with the idea...

It's an old trick, oil (from the ink) in newspaper traps dust particles better than paper towel (same theory as oiled air filter!).

Even better, Go to costo, buy a package of 3 blue cans (I believe called sprayaway) Amonia free, smells better than wet newspaper or windex and cleans AWESOME, safe on tint.

Doesn't work with news papers printed with water based inks. You can still use them to clean and polish but that old fashoned 6" shine, no. If the paper doesn't leave black stains on your hands while you read it, paper towels will work just as well.

I wash cars at my part time job at a golf course. These are high-end cars, and what I do over there is spray the window with a little bit of Stoner Invisible Glass. Take the newspaper(not colored) and crumple that up. Unfold the newspaper and go to town. It works like a charm, but put some elbow grease into it so the window doesn't streak!

i've used newspaper on my windows before, stay away from windex, the ammonia in it is bad on your tints(even if you dont have aftermarket tint, your car still has the factory tint)

i just use the stuff my local glass repair shop sells, looks like a hairspray bottle and lasts twice as long as a bottle of windex. Its also safe on tint if you have tints...

Yeah, I remember when I was living in San Diego, a homeless person came up to my truck and asked me if I wanted me windows cleaned for a dollar. He used newspapers and they looked fabulous. I gave him $20 for the good job he did.

I FUKING HATE the hard water around here and it looks nasty after it dries on windows no matter what I do. I've tried it all...nothing works EXCEPT window polish to remove the hard water spots.

I've tried the Stoner Invisible Glass and it shines up nice, but doesn't do anything for the spots. The only products that I've found that can chew through the spots are too harsh for paint, so I stay away from them.

Griot's Fine Window Polish is a PITA by hand, but it works.

So what if you want to clean the inside of the back window? Won't the newspaper hurt the embedded defogger wires?

Dirtex sold at Serman Williams paint stores, best I ever used, no streaks even if you miss a spot and takes up the hard water stains. Great for chrome too.

Hats off to your grandma. The sellers of my house told me to use ONLY ammonia and water to clean the 51 yr-old hardwood floors (they spent a fortune to redo them so I figured I better listen to them). That's the only reason I have ammonia in my house. I could not for the life of me clean my glass computer desk with window cleaner, fantastik, they all smudged and smeared and looked awful, etc, so I tried ammonia and water. holey moley, the glass just sparkles now! I didn't stop there, I did the car glass and the computer monitor. the newspaper supposedly buffs it really nicely, but i didn't find the need to use that trick because it was already crystal clear using paper towels.

Arm & Hammer baking soda is like 157 years old, and now they have a new box for your fridge that opens up on both sides like your g/f's low cut blouse--amazing how the marketing dept. keeps coming up with ways to keep pushing this ancient product, and is successful at it. My grandpa told me about their successful campaign decades ago where they told you to pour it down the drain to keep the drain fresh, and go buy another box. GENIUS marketing, people actually did it, and sales went up!

Get very fine steel wool.. believe 0000# if I'm correct, won't scratch the window, try it and you'll be thanking me later. You can use glass cleaner as the lubricant or possibly even soap.

Yeah, 0000# wool is awesome. Took the goop off when I ripped the tint off. Just be careful on the defroster lines.
Ok, so we know what works for regular windows...what about Tints? What's everybody's secret?

On the INSIDE, water spots on tint.... I STILL use steel wool..... J/K I use that sprayaway stuff from Costco, blue cans w/ like waterfall on the front or something... says right on the can, Amonia free. The other stuff that I know is amonia free has a 50's lady on the front w/ an ironing board or something like that, simple, white/blue can. ( I believe that is sprayaway's older version but I'm most likely wrong)

Right now, I use Stoner's Invisible Glass and a Microfiber Towel to clean glass.

Currently, I am running an experiment involving Stoner's and Clay that seems to be working quite well.

Is it just me or does Stoner's actually make your glass sticky? It cleans like a champ, but when it rains all I see is smear. Windshield wipers jump across the windshield. Then the glass goes right back to clean when dry. Dangerous in the rain. Anyone else have this problem?

Don't use your wipers. I'm serious. RainX and other products work the same way. It makes the water bead off once the drops get big enuf or you go fast enuf.

I was always told NOT to use newspapers to clean your windows - and that coming from my neighbor, who was the press operator for the Chicago Sun-Times.
