Am I a lightning fast shifter, or is my sub-conscious doing something?

Am I a lightning fast shifter, or is my sub-conscious doing something?

Lately, when I really concentrate on my 1-2 shift, I can shift into second and be at 5000+rpm. Tonight, I did it and held it for a second or two, then had to let off the throttle becuase I almost swerved off the road. The tires weren't squeeling, and my clutch definatally wasn't slipping, I guess the road was gravely.

Could it be that in between shifts, my right foot hasn't completely let off the gas? What would this be called? I guess I might be doing it subconsciously, because before the RPMs would always drop to around 3800-4400rpm.

thats what i usually call it. I've had a similar situation where it happened to me at the track. I banged the 1-2 shift and i got a little torque steer to the wall.

If it was wheelspin that kept me at those RPMs, why didn't I hear my tires squeeling like all hell? Can gravely paved roads really dowse the "burned rubber" sound?

what kind of tires do you have? when i had my Volks with S-03s i noticed those tires would never ever ever squeel. i could hear them spinning when i shifted hard but they never squeeled. they just made a noise like a broom sweeping the floor or something.

my point was , maybe you dont hear your tires spin because of the actual tires.

Sounds like you answered your own question. Wheel spin, uneven grip, road crown.

Newman: I have Nitto 555 245/40/18 W-Rated tires wrapping around 18x8.5 24lb. wheels. My tires squeel on most roads, and I can spin into second gear with the wheels actually squeeling. I guess the gravel of this road, caused my tires to spin without noise, which also caused my RPMs to stay higher, which caused me to enter second gar at a higher RPM, which caused me to spin into second and almost run myself off the road.

Did you hear a lot of gravel kick up? You don't have mudflaps, do you?

It's impossible to land at 5000rpms assuming you have stock 6500rpm fuel cut. Assuming you're a quick shifter, landing the 1-2 will put you at 3800rpms, but remember our tachs read high so it will read 4000-4100rpms. If you're hitting 5000rpms on the 1-2 shift, you're spinning. You may or may not hear squealing because tire make, compound, conditions, and street surface.

My 15s I use for the track don't make much noise. One day at track I thought my clutch was toasted because when I launched in 1st the rpms seemed to rise way faster than the car was accelerating. I shifted to 2nd landed at 5000rpms and got the same sensation and then the car took off (15.0@95mph). I figured it was clutch slippage because it's impossible for me to land at 5000rpms even with my 7000rpm fuel cut, everything felt very smooth, no wheelhop, absolutely no noise. After the run I figured I'd smell clutch and there was nothing I could smell. Later on the car ran fine and pulled 14.4-14.5@97mph. A few days later I talked to a guy that saw my first run and he said, "man you got some horrible spin on that 15.0 run I saw you do. It looked like when you went into 2nd the tires kept spinning."

I think it's your sub-conscious telling you to quit analyzing every little thing about your car and to just DRIVE it

Dave: Good points. One usually equates tire squeel with wheelspin, when it isn't always the case. Could the RPMs shoot up as if I was spinning, but my wheels aren't spinning; I just don't have any grip? In other words, my tires struggle to grip, so my rpms shoot up, but my tires arent necissarily spinning like they would on a smooth surface? Do you get what i'm asking?

Ejj:I think i'm gonna go whine in the boosted forums about my slow @ss car.

It is a traction loss. I tried the same thing tonight, except I stayed on it longer when shifting into second. I spun for 4 seconds. The car was pulling to the side and I almost ran off the road so I had to let off. The car jerked back straight and I was on my merry way.

I'm not a lightning quick shifter. Boost + ACT = No traction.
