coolant is leaking

On my way to Wal-Mart today, I found that the temperature meter inside car was abnomal (in high position). The coolant is leaking and almost gone. After I added a gallon of coolant (50/50) in Walmart, and I had to drive back to home, fortunately the temperature became normal.

What is problem with the leaking of Coolant? Is it related to the level of coolant in car?
How much to fix it?

Thanks

did you see it leaking or was there simply not enough coolant? if you saw it leaking its not that hard to figure out where it was coming from...

What year is your car? If it's 81-88 then just a wild guess I'd say hose or radiator. If it's 89+ then I am surprised that you have a coolant issue, because even though I've lost plenty of fluids in my 98 (power steering, oil, gear oil, all known issues) coolant is not one of them. You want to be careful because if you cook the motor you'll be sorry. Water pump sounds logical, just that I've never heard of a problem on Maximas. For example, 95-96 M3's had water pump problems with the plastic impellers, don't fix it, cook the motor and say hello to a 10grand+ bill. m3 is weird, early 2002 models have had numerous blown motors replaced under warranty--OUCH. Maybe your problems is as silly as a cracked overflow reservoir?

I guess it comes down to simply looking at where it is leaking from. You can easily find that and find out whats going on? From there you can tell is it a cracked hose, loose fitting, all that can come from simply looking.

The leaking is from the hose between the radiator and the water pump and there are some problem for the water pump (my car has the squealing noise since last week).

When the temp is high, the leaking happens.

It looks like that i have to change the water pump next week.
