when i search for parts for my maxima, i am always confronted with names i see constantly but do not know how to say. any help is appreciated.

Exedy. (exeedy or ex-eddie?)
Tein. (tain? like gain? or 'tee-in', or 'tine'?)
Cusco. (cuss-coe? or coos-coe?)
5Zigen. (5 zee-gen, or 5 ziggen?)
Tanabe. (tanna-bee, tan-abe?)

any other names you can think of that are problematic is cool, too.

Here's how I pronounce them in my head...

Ex-eddie, Tee-in, coos-coe, 5-zee-gen, ta-na-bee (it's Japanese pronunciation)

Well I hear them pronounced all different ways but this is how a good buddy of mine who owns a shop pronounces them and how I usually hear them pronounced, as well as how I pronounce them myself.

5Zigen is pronounced "Go-ziggen". "Go" is the number 5 in Japanese.

Exedy = eggs-ed-ee not with a hard X sound but with a softer almost G sound like in the word eggs, as in chicken eggs.

Tein = tine. hard I, silent E. Like Mine.

Cusco = cuss-co This is the one I am least sure about it

Tanabe = tah-nah-bay. like the expression "tadaa" some people say when they complete something, and bay, as in san francisco bay.

Eibach I know for a fact is "eye-bach" bach is said just like the classical composer.

Apex'i first of all is short for Apex Integration. I pronounce it "Ah-pex-ee" Ah = the sound you make when you get into a hot tub, as in "ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" Pex = pecs like pectoral muscles.

Man we could go on with these for days.

this is fun. between the two of you, i think Tein is not 'tee-in.' it think it is more like 'tine.' like 'mine.' like how Nealoc187 said it. it is the most mysterious one of them all to me. but if one considers the piano company "Steinway," which is "stine-way," then Tein can be thought of as "Tine"("teinway") - Nealoc187's idea.

Apex'i. i would assume that "apex," which means "highest point" in latin, is pronounced as it is spelled: "ay-pecks"(hard 'a' and then 'pecs' like pectoral muscles). so it probably is "ay-pex-ee." not "ahhhhhh-pecs-ee."

eibach is german just like the classical composer, too.

is Skunk2, then, "Skunk-nee." as "ni" is two in japanese.

and as far as i know, Cusco and Exedy are the same company basically. or one is a subsidiary of the other.

I think Exedy is pronounced in between the lines of Ex-eddie and eggs-eddie. Just don't hold any sound.

You may be right about Tein. What country does that company originate from?

Apex'i seems like a given... "uh-pexi" ....that's how I've always said it.

"Go-zigen" sounds cool...I agree with that one since it's a Japanese company.

except eibach, i think most of those companies are japanese, come to think of it. now>>> for that matter, to "correctly" pronounce the english version, roman letter spelling of "Tein" in japanese, you would say "tay-een." (that it is actually said that way is another matter!)

in japanese, then, "Tanabe" is pronounced "tan-ah-bay." with no accent on any syllable, as japanese is flat.

sure is fun guessing.

Romanized Japanese is called romaji. And while "tay" and "teh" maybe be similar, it's more along the sound of the first two letters in "tetherball."

Greddy to me has always been as it looks. "greddy." no linguistic anomalies to it.

with the ever confusing "Tein," i will just say it like "tain."

i will ask a japanese person about Tein. my ex-girlfriend is japanese.

Yeah Greddy is Greddy...doesn't sound weird at all.

I took Japanese as my foreign language in high school, and even if I may not be fluent in it, I know how to pronounce romaji. It has to be Teh-in. Japanese is usually easy to pronounce since it's split up to nicely. Te-i-n. "Tain" sound like a mispronounced version because the "i" in Tein should be emphasized. That's why the word is two syllables, not one.

i say GReedy greedy, but if you look at the official way they write it it is GReedy with the r and g being capital it makes me think that its gee ready, as in being ready for g's, like acceleration???

That's Japanese for you...heh. You get used to it once you start speaking a little in Japanese.

Things like karakoke which is correctly pronounced "kah-rah-oh-keh."

TurDz says correct japanese way is teh-in, romanji way.

5Zigen i thought was said "5 Zee-gehn." with "i" sounding like long "eeeee" on the "Zee" part. but Y2KSE says it is "Zye" like "eye." so is it "zye-gehn" or "zeeee-gehn." which one?

i can allow for vernacular pronunciation, too. different regions of the country may say the vowels differently. like new york vernacular is very different from alambama vernacular.

so it can be relative. that seems like a safe way to include everything.

i asked my ex-girlfriend, from osaka, about Tein. and she had no idea what that was at all! she said she would ask people for english pronunciation. so that is still to come.

We were excited to meet them and talk with them about their products. They had a demo unit of the EDFC (Electronic Damping Force Controller) that was very cool. The control box is very simple to use this would seem to be a requisite addition for anyone getting the Teins - being able to instantly switch between ride settings is awesome! Funny story... They walk in late that evening, about 6:00, and say "Hello, we are {names} from Tein". I immediately look over at Steve and say, "Well, I guess that answers the question of how you pronounce it!" In the Tein ad it shows the pronounciation. It has a line over the A thus making it a long A...i'm pretty sure.
