All conversion heads....poke in here...PLEASE!

Ok...as most of you know...my max was destroyed...well I think I've found another, its a 95 GXE (auto) that needs a new motor. My car is a 97se (5-speed) Now, my motor still runs and runs well for that matter (yes, even all crashed up), so what I want to do is the motor and tranny swap together...basically I'm going to have the cars side by side and do the work. My uncle and I are are going to be undertaking this together.

I need to know what extra special tools might be needed for this, keep in mind that its both a motor and tranny swap together. Also is it possible to get both the motor and trannies out without taking them apart?

Craig Mack..if you read this, I was reading one of your posts about swaping out the harnesses for the ECUs...since I have the cars I will want to do this..can you be more specific please.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ola

I don't think your going to need any *special* tools. Your gonna have to dremel a hole for your master cylinder/clutch pedal, but no custom fabricating will be needed. Just swap axles, trannies, motor mounts, ect. ect.

Your going to want to swap the 5spd harness AND ecu for the auto harness/ecu. Your gonna have to rip apart your dash to do the harness swap. Swapping ECU's will get rid of the CEL and akward pause before dropping down to idle. Mine still has a pause, but its briefer then the auto pause. Swapping the harness will give you back your cruise control and make your car 100% factory 5spd-like.

Since you have all the parts for free side by side for the swap, I say go all the way with the harness/ecu. Good luck with the swap, and don't forget to use Cbr2's guidelines, he was the mastermind behind me and Harold's swaps.

O
Go to Hlh0501's website, and on his sidebar there will be a link to the 5spd conversion page. It's like 16 pages when printed out...very detailed instructions on the conversion! And for the motor swap, email ejj if you have questions, he just recently swapped his engine out as i'm sure you know.

With the cars side by side it shouldn't be too tough. The ECU/Harness swap sounds to me to be the hardest part. I made sure I didn't have to deal with any of that.

You will need to seperate the engine and tranny, unless you are working on a lift and can get enough clearence to side the motor in and out under the cars.

As for special tools, I needed the following:

- Engine Hoist and straps/chains
- 36mm Socket for axles
- Pilot bearing puller (you may not need)
- Slide hammer
- Pully puller (you may not need...for my SC pully)

I rented everything but the hoist from AutoZone for free (deposit). I got lucky with the hoist and borrowed one from a guy my dad works with for 2 12 packs of beer. I'm sure you can rent them though.

Everything else was done with good ole' hand tools!

heres a question, isn't the 95 OBD1 and 97 OBD2? If so, you might have some more unforseen problems, such as O2 sensors and such.

I didn't switch the harnesses, I still have cruise. I just swapped in a 96 5-speed ECU and it works like a champ with no idling or "pausing" problems. You just can't be stupid with wiring, if you do everything Hal says, it works fine.

I promise you. As long as you follow Hal's kit as I did and replace the ECU, you will retain cruise, get no CEL, and will run fine......

Since you will probably have to separate the engine and transmission, now's the time to replace the clutch. And install a Fidanza flywheel.

don't mind jeffy he just wants your money.

When I revv at a stop, it drops to around 1000 for a second, then drops down to 600. I don't know if it did it at first, but everything is fine so I don't really care. With the Auto ECU it would stick around ~1400 for several seconds.
