Tire width.

Hi,

Has anyone here tried slightly different tire width front/rear?

I've got an extra pair of 235/45ZR17's sitting around, and want to keep the rear 245/45ZR17's on for a little longer... think I can get away with it without feeling too much weirdness in handling? Or should I get spacers?

Your thoughts... thanks

Hey not to ***** up your thread, but I have a question regarding Tire Width as well.

If you put a 245/40/18 tire on an 18x8 rim, and a 245/40/18 tire on an 18x8.5 rim, will the setup on the 8.5" rim appear wider then the setup on the 18x8, even though they are the same tire?

Tire footprint will still be the same, so technically no it won't be wider... or appear wider.. you'll just have more of a curvature on the sidewall/more sidewall flex.

Guess that somewhat answers my tire width question lol!

yes it will look a bit wider but also a bit lower.

i have 245/35/19 and would like to try a 255/35/19 on the rear. my wheels have a 35mm offset and are 19x8.

anyone here try a 255/35/19 on the rear of a 4th gen?

So, with the 8.5" rim, since it fills out the tire better, it will give more of a "flat" footprint? Is that what your trying to say?

I answer my own questions all the time.

Can you please describe what you mean by a bit lower? I'm really hyped that it will look wider even though I don't understand how. 99maxima5sp swore up and down that wheel width means jack ****, and that it's all about the tire.

your wright the footprint will be the same but by streching the sidewall out more it will look wider when you look at the car from the rear because now your looking at the tire & the sidewalls as one.

so instead of just looking at the footprint now with the wider wheel you will see sidewall/footprint/sidewall.

by streching the sidewall out it will become shorter. most ppl are against streching tires out. you should get the proper tire for the wheel you will be using.

it's not a day or night different but if you have 1 of each in front of you, you will see the difference.

thats the reason i would like to try a 255/35/19 on the rear. not only will it be wider but a tad taller.

also keep in mind that if you strech a tire out the sidewall will protect your wheel less, both inside & out.

I know, but from what i've researched a 245/40 tire is the optimal size for an 8.5" rim.

i used to have 18x8.5 rims that had a 38mm offset with 245/40/18

you also have to look out for the offset, to high of an offset and you will rub in the front on the inside when you make a sharp turn (like when making a u-turn or when parking).

Your right. My tires come literally less them a mm away from the tirewell when turning the steering wheel. In fact, on extreme U-turns they used to rub a little when the tire was brand new, but now that it's worn down some, it's ceased. (thats my theory anyway)

I guess that's the price we pay for good looks and a fat tire.
