Engine cleaning question.
#1
I have a 95 GXE and the engine is starting to get dirty.( I unfortunately support computers in a Dirt mine. No joke) I want to start making it look cleaner and newer, but A few detailing shops I have talked to won't clean engines anymore. Does anyone on here detail their engines? What do you use?
I want my engine bay to look good, but not at the cost of my engine.
Thanks

I use simple green, but whatever floats your boat... Also we don't have a distributor, so I don't worry about covering things up. I just go at it, you might want to cover your intake if you don't have a CAI.

How's this for clean? :)

I usually wash the car by hand at home, but whenever I go to a "real" car wash, I just stick a wal-mart sack over my K&N filter, then go after it with the sprayer.. I don't even worry about the distributor (mine has one).. I jsut don't spray too hard in that area.. never had a problem with it.
every now and then, I'll spray the engine bay down with a foaming engine cleaner or 409 or Simple Green or something.. usually I just use the jet-sprayer thingy with water only, then go over any dirty areas with a soapy rag and rinse..
Before car shows, I'll pop the hood and go over allt he open areas with quick detailer to get rid of any water spots and stuff. keeps everything looking very clean and shiny.
If all you want to do is knock the dirt off your engine, I'd just take it to a car wash and hose the crap out of it. (be sure to "bag" your intake first!)
Try to do it while the engine is still cool/warm. the car wash is only about 3 blocks from my house, so I can get there before the engine gets very hot.. only deal there, is you run the risk of damaging your exhaust when you hit a hot exhaust with cold water.. (the VG engines have a tendency to break exhaust studs, and I broke one of mine spraying down a hot engine once)
hope that helped.

Matt that thing is filthy... j/k...

Everytime I wash the car I rinse out the engine bay. Once its clean its not the tough to maintain. It getting it clean the first time thats tough. Simple green is suppose to do the trick however I don't use it.
I shoove a towel into the intake and rinse out the compartment with a hose. If you have a cone filter put a plastic bag on it. I attempt to avoid the electrical as much as possible. Next I take a soapy towel and wash down as much as I can get at. Then rinse it off.
Btw... Don't do this to a hot engine, I wouldn't want to crack anything.

Just wait till I get done, wizeass!
:P
I'm trying to figure out what to chrome/polish/clean/paint next...
I'm thinking to either install a "VG red" CAI, or to finish cutting off my resonator then sand it smooth and paint it red.. either way will change the look of the entire engine bay.. I'm thinking more along the lines of a CAI though. maybe I'll chrome it. hehehe

Or you could buy SkyMax's Chromed CAI.....
It's in the FS section.
