This is more proof of how durable the VG is

My friend has a 93 Maxima GXE, with the VG, (i think that's which one its called 160/183). Her car has been overheating and she continued to drive it anyway. She drove that car overheating for A YEAR before she blew the engine. A YEAR!! She was of course mad when she blew the head gasket, but I told her, if this was a Ford or a Chevy your engine would have blown the second day it was overheating. I mean that is amazing to me, that an engine with already 100k on it will operate FOR A YEAR overheating so bad that the needle goes off the dial!!!! Nissan sure knows how to make engines.

my 87 pathie had a VG, went 245K then the starter went, and mom sold it. It was a dog but never let me down.

my dad had an 89 GXE. the only major problem was the tranny..had it rebuilt once at 240k-ish..the day before he went to trade it in, the a/c was stuck "on" and this was in february (of 2000 i think).
trade in was i think $1800 with 385k. basically clean body, bose was shot, sunroof wouldnt close right(had to play with it)...still would've lasted if you could deal with its imperfections. only maintainence really was timing belts and oil changes...injectors never had a problem like alot of people seem to encounter.

What amazes me is that she would drive it for 1 year without getting the overheating problem fixed ?

Here here!!! i had an 87 pathfinder as well...it ran PERFECT...except for the leak in the front of the engine...i think it was oil...a very SMALL leak, but one none the less....parents sold it because of "unreliability".... its my favorite SUV to this day....

"edit" btw, it had 255,000 miles on it

I loved my pathie, it would go anywhere, had stock 15" chrome wheels, perfect paint, and it had a nice ride.

Pretty funny, but studies actually show that women are more cautious with doing things routinely with vehicles then guys are.....all of my guy friends cant do an oil change when you are supposed to, they wait like 6000-7000 miles to do it...where as my girlfriends do it much better like around 2000-4000 miles....but then again airheads are out there :-P

its funny you mention that, if i hear a strange noise, even if it happens just once, i spend the next hour or so trying to figure out what it is, if my oil isnt changed within 3500-4000 miles i start driving my car as sparingly as possible until its changed..all the girls i know couldnt care less about anything to do with their car. driving home just now there was strange vibration above 40mph, i stopped to investigate..couldnt find anything but tires that're almost down to the wear bars. i'll tell my mom tomorrow (driving her car until mines finished)..that should go over well

The engine would have lasted longer if she had changed the thermostat or figured out what the other issues were. She destroyed a motor because of an easy to fix issue.
