Proper way to clean K&N filter?

I am on the verge of cleaning my K&N filter (bought a PR CAI cheap and cleaning filter just to test if its better than hybrid setup, if not, clean stillen filter and put just midpipe of PR CAI on). But i hear of people killing their MAF's cause of too much oil and whatnot. Before I go through this (lord knows i have a bad rep of f'ing things up when trying to do stuff myself), can anyone give me a proper revision of how to clean my filter? Or should i just follow instructions....?

Just dont over oil? I know the newer cars are more sensitive to oil but i have a 97 so i'm sure mine wont react as bad as the 2k2's. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Just bought the recharger kit for 9.99 at autozone Btw

lol i did read the box and everything but sometimes their instructions arent the best (i mean maybe they want u to put too much oil). Just checking for second opinion...but i guess u all recommend doing what the box says....

just spray a really light coat at first, then go back over it after a while and spray any light/white spots again (which is pretty much what it says on the box)

It's easy to add more oil, but harder to take it off (or fix a blown MAF)..

If you DO over-oil it, simply spray it down with the cleaner again and let it soak for a few minutes... rinse.. repeat..

spray and pray.... thats when you kill your MAF sensor...i reccomend follow instructions. Spray one light coat, let it sit for an hour or so in a warm place. Then coat again, leave overnight or atleast i say....6 hours untill its not so moist.

Dunk it in a bucket of engine oil and let those twin turbos breath!

*read the box a few more times. It say not to overoil it*

Sometimes I wonder it it makes sense to put a dry foam filter over the MAF screen to catch any K&N oil that blows off the filter.

Crazy idea? Is there a foam filter material out there that could be cut in a circle and placed over the MAF screen???

Some here seem to be saying to oil twice--I don't recommend that. Just lightly oil once. My car just got 30 mpg today on a trip, so the K&N is hanging in. It's been over 5k since I cleaned it. Oil twice would probably bring that mpg to its knees.

Follow the instructions on the box. After oiling the second time (to get the spots you may have missed), set it on a couple layers of paper towels for awhile. This will soak the excess oil up. You can also blot up any excess from the metal screen, and down in the pleats. Also wipe off the excess oil from the rubber around the edges, as it serves no purpose there.
When done, the filter should not look "wet", but just a uniform pinkish-red color, maybe slightly damp.

I agree with dave, I also wrapped it with paper towels before putting it back on, and the paper towel was pretty red, I think that helps get an even coating on the filter
