Question: 95-99 I30 5spd work in my car?

Sorry for the dumb question.

I feel like such a noob!

Were the I30s that are like the 4th gen Max the same exact years...

so if I find a 5 spd trans out of any year 95-99 I30...itll work right?

do all the 95-99 I30s have LSD?

Pretty sure that it's the same thing. See no reason as to why they would be different

I thinks it's only the i30Ts. Also you should've known this since the CONVERSION Write up page mentioned the I30 trannies as better replacements...

Yes, any 1st gen I30 tranny can be used in a 4th gen Max. Not all I30 are VLSD. It was an option that came standard on the T package or the cold weather package, but any I30 could have limited slip if it was orderd that way.
New axels will be need if your going to go with an I30 VSLD tranny since the drivers side axel is a different size than a Maxima with an open differential. Also beware of the bearing issue with any used 5-speed tranny, the I30 is prone to this problems as well, trust me I would know.

.....or you could go with a 2k or 2k1 tranny that has limited slip.

What size drivers side axle do you have to get? From what car? Do you have to use the I30's driver side axle?

Yes, 1st gen I30. 95-99. hehehe

differential bearings go bad in I30's and Max 5-speeds. It's a expensive repair, so make sure the bearings are checked before any used tranny is intalled. If you don't know about the bearing issue do a search, it is well documented. I had to rebuild by tranny because of it.

Bejay1 has put a 2k LSD tranny into his 4th gen.

Do a search on the 4th gen forum. There's a member (BEJAY1 I think) that did a 2k1 AE VLSD trans into a 4th gen car (96 I believe). Everything fit, but the drivers side VLSD axle was needed. He used a 2k1 AE axle, but I'm not sure there's any difference from a Canadian, or I30 4th gen VLSD dr side axle.

Gonna do the same 2k1 AE trans swap on my 98 as soon as the boneyard dr side axle arrives, might be this weekend. I'll post a writeup when I'm finished. I read a post or two that suggested Nissan finally shimmed their diff bearings right by the 5th gen 5spd cars. No way to know, as they typically don't have the miles yet where these problems occur. But the newer 5th gen trans will by and large have less miles, so that's one thing in your favor. I'd assume the open diff 5th gen 5spds would be a direct swap w/o axle changes.
