"Bedding" new brakes
"Bedding" new brakes
I just got the new brake disks and pads from Automax_95 GD, and the pads need to be "bedded". The procedure is outlined on the box with the pads (10 30mph-0 stops, i believe). the box with the brake disks says that i shouldnt brake for more than 3 sec. at a time at first. anyone can shed the light on the proper procedure?
Thanx!

Every maker has their own way of bedding. For Hawks it's 5-10 30mph-0, 5 minute break, 5-10 45mph-0, then 15 minutes to completely cool off. Again a firm brake is recommended.
The most important thing is to not let the wheel come to a complete stop with the brakes applied, so you will have to do some sort of rolling stop.
If your 15 minute cool-down is done by parking the car, remember, no parking brake if you did the rears! I just drove on the highway for 30 minutes. (yeah, there is some brake drag and heat but it can't be that bad).
I also take it easy on the brakes for the first 100-200 miles, until someone ****es me of and I loose it, I snap, flurry to the solarplexis and an uppercut to the noggin!

If you installed new rotors as well as pads, then just take it easy on driving for a couple/few hundred miles...
Then finish bedding the pads in by doing some moderate stops. usually I do a 30-5, 40-5, 50-5, 60-5, 70-5, etc until the brakes get nice and stinky.. then DRIVE to cool them off. don't park the car, as you'll hold heat in the rotors where the pads are covering them.
drive the car for a good 20-30 minutes using the brakes at little as possible to cool them off, and you're done.
It's important to go easy on the new rotors for the first couple hundred miles though, to let them properly heat cycle. if you do all that braking on a brand new rotor, you're likely going to warp them and ruin them the first day.
