you do know this wont make you shifting effort and shorter or diffrent. just cause its called a short shifter doesn't mean its literaly shorter.

Yes, I know that cutting the stock shifter is not going to make the throw any shorter. I just want a better feel and look. I have a Momo shift **** and it looks stupid with such a long shifter. I want to get a B&M but I am a poor highschool student so I just want to cut the stock one until I can get a B&M.

once again, by simple geometry, it WILL make your shift shorter.. it will also make your shifts require more effort

Cutting a shifter is about as as cutting springs.

And if you do cut it, you cant call it a STS, you can just call it a Cut Stock Shifter, or if you want, Cut Stock Throw Shifter

I cut the entire length of threads off (so about 1.5inches maybe??!), then i got tired of rowing a boat and bought a Pacesetter adjustable STS and couldnt be happier...

I cut my shifter about 2". It's kinda tough to get into gear, but it does feel better. Driving a maxima is not like rowing a boat.

My reasoning:

Cut = $free.99
STS = $60 or something.

$free.99 > $60.

good luck with your project man.. i'm sure you will enjoy the feel.
i read a lot of people having to really hack their cars to get the STS on and then the added headaches.

I've had a cut stock shifter (1.5"), Pacesetter STS, and B&M shifter. Guess what I'm running? The cut shifter. The Pacesetter/B&M STS' are CRAP, especially the B&M. All these shifters really do is make the shifter super short, throw unnecessarily notchy and short, and the shift pattern is mover about 1.5" forward which is uncomfortable for taller drivers. A true STS DOES NOT make the shifter much shorter, but instead makes the throws more crisp, solid, and reduces the throws enough that you can still feel the detents for each gear. I think Stillen in the only company making the right kind of STS right now. I'm a 1/4 mile racer and with the Pacesetter/B&M, I never felt comfortable with the shifter because:

1) I felt like I was working against the box
2) I couldn't tell exactly where the detents were
3) I couldn't hit the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts without thinking

I'm happy with my cut shifter because it's smooth, sits at the right height, and offers about a 30% less throw.

I am TOTALLY with dave, But i cut my shifter 2.5'' and couldnt be happier, look is sportier, but not slammed down into the boot. I can shift with my arm resting on the console now, and the gates are easier to feel. DO IT!
