Car fails to start: Alternator problem?...
Car fails to start: Alternator problem?...
First let me say what aftermarket electronics I have on the car:
NOS kit - installed for 2 months (solenoids are on a switch and I don't think microswitch activates until throttle is depressed).
Strobe light in trunk - installed for a year w/no problems.
Electro-luminescent gauges - installed for a year w/no problems.
Stereo (reciever and speakers) - professionally installed for two years w/no problems.
Well the problems seems to be my alternator, but I don't want to guess. Basically everytime I use my car my battery loses significant power. As in the next time or the time after that, there will not be enough power to crank. I had a Optima red-top installed less than a year ago, so I don't think its the battery.
Here's something peculiar I noticed. I started the car after charging and turned it off since I was just making sure it started. Well when I turned it off, everything in my car lost power. I noticed my security light on my radio wasn't even blinking. I put the key back in and turned, and nothing turned on - as if the battery has been disconnected to the car. When I put the cables on to start it again and plugged the charger in, every worked again. I unplugged the charger and it still worked. It is like a giant fuse blew or something, but everything works perfectly. I am thinking maybe I have an exposed ground, but this has only happened once, and could it be related to all the loss of power? All these problems came shortly after I installed my nitrous-oxide kit, but I think I installed everything correctly and I put a loom over every connector to make sure nothing would short.
Thanks a ton,

You need to get the car started and use a multimeter on the battery or alternator and see if it is charging at 13.4-13.8 volts. If it is in between those specs, then the alternator itself is fine. If not, then you have either a wiring problem (as you mentioned) or something is up with your battery.
