Enough is enough!

Does anyone know how to retread a bolt without retreading it with a special metal bolt. I have one of those and the bolt just freakin ripped the new threads I retreaded. I am not taking the intake manifold off again! Is there something else you can use?

BTW: It is the bolt that is cast into the lower intake manifold all the way to the left on my 4th gen.

There are kits to fix this type of thing but you will have to use a bigger bolt afterward. I think there is one that is like a paste but its not as strong as just cutting into the metal.

Your post is a little confusing I think you mean re-threading, right? Sounds like whatever the bolt threads into (nut or tapped hole) has bad threads. In this case you can use a thread tap to re-tap the hole. Sometimes just running the tap through will be good enough, but if the threads are totally gone, then you can re-tap to a larger size and use a larger bolt, or you can order a threaded insert, which threads into a larger hole you tap and has the original size thread for the ID.

Uhhhhhh,
so you're saying the bolt you keep trying to thread in there is tearing up the threads?

doesn't sound like it's lined up right..

have you re-tapped the threads on the hole yet? (a tap is the tool that cuts the threads into the metal)

If you run into any more problems PM me and I'll send you my phone number.. If you can get the car out to Pearland, I'll be glad to take a look at it for you.

Also.. if it's just one bolt on the manifold, how many of the other bolts on the manifold have you put in? try loosening all the other bolts so the manifold moves freely, then get that screw going in there.. once you've got it started, put the rest in.. but just start them all a few threads-- if you tighten them down on one end, you may not be able to get one or two bolts in at the other end. it's a PIA but you gotta do it that way.

Well I taped the bolt that is cast into the manifold. I guess I must have done it a little crooked and the first nut stayed on there but after that it would just spin, not it is so ****ed up the bolt does not have any threads. How can I retap it bigger if the bolt is much smaller now?

then you need to get a new bolt, and figure out why that one is messing up.
I suggest buying a tap the same size as well as a new bolt to go in there.. run the tap down the hole to clean it up and fix the problem, then install the new bolt.

Is your car running? bring it down here and I'll help you out. I'd head your direction and help you out, but my tranny is in the middle of the garage waiting on new engine and tranny seals..

cast manifold...
you might want to weld a "bung" in it.

The bolt is part of the lower manifold, you cannot remove it. I would have to cut if off and weld a new one on. I really don't want to run my car with a manifold leak. I might come over there Matt, let me see if i can fix it tomorrow.

depends how much thread is left. since alum is soft it's difficult to work with. even w/ helicoil it still won't be that strong. best to tap it once and tap it right...w/ alum it's very unforgiving with mistakes.
sounds like someone wants to run some NOS plumbing
