something weird and scary, help....
i was driving up a steep hill out of the town in which i live today, and out of the parked cars comes running a little kid after their ball. YIKES!!! i was accelerating at the time, and i yanked the wheel to avoid the kid and i got around him but the wheel wouldnt straighten out for a second which seemed like an eternity. its almost like i lost power steering for a second or almost all steering control completely. anyone ever experience this? it really freaked me out. it almost took me into the parked cars on the other side of the street. any ideas??
On my 95 I have experienced something similar while driving on the freeway and having to swerve to avoid an object that I didn't see until the last moment. . . I was traveling at 70 mind you, but when I had to quickly turn the wheel to the left it seemed like an eternity until I could get it back straight and it felt very unresponsive, enough so that I thought I would lose control of the car if I tried to straighten it out. . . I had a car full of people and thought that that might of been the reason, but it still freaked me out as the car normally seemed a lot better when it comes to handling. . . And it will continue to be a concern for me as it didn't seem normal for the car.
I think it's because of tire slip...
I've noticed mine do this at lower speeds more often.. whenever I'm on the gas hard enough to make one tire spin or break loose at all, the steering will "hold itself" in place and I have to force it back to where I want it to go. it has caused me some very near misses while pulling out into traffic and stuff... (One time it almost drove back into the parking lot I just pulled out of!!)
If I let off the gas enough to let the tires grab hold again, the steering goes back to "normal"..
so my guess it would be that it happens whenever you have a tire that's slipping/spinning.
