Started doing my own body work on sleepy; some pictures inside, incomplete project

I bought a 95 max and it was in fair condition exterior wise. Some BS fell on the hood damaging it. I been wanting to get this car fixed. I acquired a trunk lid to do a 97-99 body conversion. Body work is very expensive. This weekend my sister and her husband drove in from North Carolina. Hes a body guy. I let him use my SCed 95 max. He said I can fix that car for you. I was like what ever. Next thing you know we are at the store. Bought about 5 types of guns, sandpaper, primer and bondo. Before you know it the car is 70% complete. Hell I decided to prime another car just to get some practice with the gun. I wont be doing the actual painting since i dont have a paint booth but will be buying my own paint a cost Here are some pictures

That 97plus conversion made me do this. It was going to cost me at least $500 to get all this done. Instead of buying a hood I bought my own tools and fixed it myself. It may need a couple of more coats and some fine sanding and Ill be done. Now I have to find out how much that Dupont paint costs for this car? makes me want to buy a kit and get it all done at once.

I dont even know what that means but its a cheap $12.00 Harbor freight gun. Guy said they are a POS, just used for spraying primer. I did buy a top feed gun for $70, came with a air pressure regulator.

I may not do the actual painting. I dont have the right setup for it. My father said he saw someone do that and the paint got damaged almost immediately. I am going to pay a shop for the actual painting. I am just going to prep up the car and get the paint of my choice.

I have nothing but good things to say about Paintscratch.com. I've purchased a couple hundred dollars in paint from them and is great. They will even give you a free replacement if the paint doesn't match up correctly.

Their paint is a little on the high side but it's worth it.

I could only imagine the fine I would get using that gun in my shop, they are illegal to use in a bodyshop. Here is some work to see http://www.weierdesigns.com/pictures.html

i believe non HVLP guns have a lot of over spray and spray mist...that means more pollutions going into the air.

A High Volume/Low Pressure (HVLP) paint spray system is an efficient technology for the application of paint to specific workpieces. These systems operate at low pressures, which result in the application of paint at low velocities.
HVLP paint systems atomize paint by delivery a high volume of air at a low pressure [less than 10 pounds per square inch (psi)]. Because the atomized paint particles are delivered at low velocities to the object being painted, less paint is lost as overspray, bounce, and blow back. Typically the transfer efficiency with HVLP paint system is 50 to 65%.

paintscratch.com is great for touch ups...but for painting the entire nose you're better off using a real spray gun.

if your primer is not compatible with your top coat you'll run into those problems.
when you're going to paint stay with one company's paint. IE if you use PPG use PPG primer/mid/top/clear.

of course there are some overlap that other company's paint will work with another.

man as a general rule you do not repair large dents in hoods, you just replace the hood. Large temperature transitions cause body fillers to expand and contract causeing cracking. If you are looking at this being a long term paint job you might consider purchasing a new hood.

I was going to buy a new hood but dude said it can be repaired. For now if this holds up at least 18months Ill be good until I get more funds to buy a new one.

Thanks for the info Dan

You have to use a HVLP for painting if you run a bodyshop

hvlp is high volume low pressure, most guns are made that way now. 70 bucks for a "high end " gun is still really cheap. my primer gun was 100 bucks. 2-300 is a better range for a good gun. im not saying you cant get good results from a 70 dollar gun. quality is part material, part equiptment, but it means nothing if you have no experience

so true...a good painter can compensate for a not so good gun.

a rookie painter can make a $$ gun's work look like crap.

Hey, I've been wanting to do the same thing to my 91 max. The paint was in poor condition and I want to prep the whole car for paint. Anyone have any idea where I should start? sand down old paint? use a chemical paint stripper? How do you prep the metal for primer? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
