You have to pop off the cv joint off. You should be able to use a heavy hammer and gently tap the joint off the axle. Clean up the grease, repack it. Then slide the new boot on the axle. (remember slide the clips on before the boot). Then tap the CV back onto the axle. Slide the boot over the CV and clamp the boot clamps down.

If you are good, you won't even have to remove the axle from the car. I suggest taking the strut assembly completely off to give you more room. That is alot easier than draining the tranny, removing the whole axle etc......

Make sure the joint is not blown out before you start ripping things apart.

It does not actually have to get dirt in it to be worn. If all of the grease was slung out during operation, it could cause excessive wear in the outer joint.

It's surely bad. I have never repaired a CV axle but they sell reman axles for around $200 if yours is worn enough to warrant replacement. Sounds like it was running pretty dry from what you describe.

Even though boot replacement is very possible, for you I would suggest a entire axle replacement since you label yourself as a ***. From what I'm hearing from others I beleive reman axles can be bought at Napa for $60-$70 per axle.

For me nothing but boot replacement for my cars. When caught at a early stage of boot failure, $5-$10 per boot out weighs a lot of things. Plus I get the satisfaction that the job was replace correct, since I did it

Check my homepage for some pics of my last boot replacement, good luck.
