Damn you're only 18 and you're looking for either a new altima or used Bimmer? You're blessed man.

Either way, hope you make a wise decision with your future purchase.

I can't see the 528i being as fast as the Maxima and unless you are a backyard mechanic the maintenance will eat you alive! It's probably worse on gas as its a heavier car. Does it only have a 2.8 litre engine?

I sold the max beacuse it was jst getting old. It had 140k and i needed to throw up money for a new paint job because of all the scratches , the 97 front convesion wasn't painted and the part above the rear taillight was repaired as you can see in the pics in my homepage.

I narowed it down to a beemer because it semi quick,(pritty close to the max) not to bad on gas, and its big, 4dr and 5spd. ALso might get the alti or the max but that will cost me more tahn the beemer on taxes and will cost more in general.

And im not machanice but i did all my mods myslef like suspention and clutch , but i hope the beemer is reliable, they usualy are form what i hear.

And hamy you got a nice max but im still on a budget and dont realy got $$ to buy a already modded max. Looks like a great car tho.

I am not sure about the 97 528 but electrical problems plague older Bimmers. I would NEVER think about owning one unless I had a lot of extra cash around as there are too many expensive fixes for students to deal with. Friends of mine own brand new BMW's with electrical quirks and I sure wouldn't want to pay the bill had the cars not been under warranty.

the bimmer is a good choice but as a student my self i know how tight cash can be sometimes and it may become a liability if it breaks on u. i wish u luck.

ok...I don't get it...sold your max because it needs a paint job and has 140k miles, but you want to buy a 97 528, which will likely have at least 95k miles and you think thats going to be reliable? Don't get me wrong...I love bimmers just like the next guy, but man...u WILL (mark my words) hate the bimmer due to the maintenance that the baby will need. If you go with the 2k2 max/alty...u'll likely have a warranty, but then the note/insurance will eat you alive...especially as a student.

either way..best of luck to ya...check out... www.bimmerforums.com

for the 97 528i, think 4th gen maxima power in a 6th gen max body. it's got 190 hp 206 lbs of tq and weighs 3450 lbs. don't do it man. see if you can swing a 540i. it's got 4.4L 285 hp v8 w/ 310 ft lbs of tq. they average $2k-$3k more than the same year 528i, which isn't much for all the extra car you'll get. my cousin has a 98 and it is a beautiful car.

i coudnt agree more. i dont typically offer up my opinion, but coming from a bmw fan, stay away from the 528. it may offer more upscale options and nicer interior but it has no guts.

No the 528 is not bad on maintenance. The I-6 cars are by far the least expensive to maintain in the BMW lineup. Certainly the 4.4 liter V8 has tons more guts but the BMW V8 cars are far more expensive to maintain.

ya i chose the 528 instead of 540 cause its good on gas and i dont need the power of a 540 , as a student i cant get any tickets Plus i dont drive that fast

But out of curiosity, would insurance be the same in a 540 and 528??

Tho the 540 and 2k2'sare gas guzzlers, Ill see, i wish the 2k2 altima was alittle cheaper but ill see what i find, they are rare in 3.5 manual to. But ya i am leaning torwds the 3.5 alti cause i already got the 19s to throw on it.

And i didnt sell the max just cause it needed a paint job and high miles, i just got sick of replacing stuff, in 2004 alone i already did wheel bearing, axle, starter and other small things and i kept getting new noises .
I just want a newer car.

And I can write up a list of what is wrong with that car without even looking at it. One morning it isn't going to start when it fries a $1000 DME because the spark plug holes are full of oil and it shorted the thing out. And when it comes to that you can just laugh at him and say "haha, i told you so"

If you buy a BMW that hasn't been properly maintained you're just buying someone elses neglected nightmare. They're great cars for sure but just like any other autos they can only tolerate soo much neglect. Whatever you decide to get make sure to take it to a local shop that speacializes in that particular car or manufacturer and have them look it over before you buy.

I'd get a E36 M3. Just a bit more than the 528 and much nicer. For the $15k they both cost, give take few $$$, I'd get a newer 4th gen.

dam man, sucks that you got rid of your car. Was hoping to see it at june 5 meet. . Well i say get the maxima unless u want a car taht says wow but everything else is a disadvantage (maintanance, speed, etc.)

If u gonna get a BMW 5 series, just get the 540. What sense is it getting the middle? tahts like getting a C class benz. your basically just getting it to say u have a BMW. Either way, you are young and accomplishing things fast props to u

Im gona look in to the 540 and see the price diff. I dont wanna get something i cant aford......gas insurance and that kinda stuff.

And e36 m3 is just to small for me, i like big cars ann when i drove the m3 i had to put the seat all the way back to be confterble, and no on would be able to fit in the rear. It just felt so small after driving a maxima for so long. Also im not looking to go to crazy with speed.

when i was going to get rid of my 4th gen i was looking at an M3 too. bmw will only sell it as a "certified pre-owned BMW" if it has less than 60K miles on it. other than that you only get some lame 3 month 3K mile warranty and are screwed to deal with any repairs you incur on your own. I ended up getting my 2k2 maxima with a full warranty for the same price i could have gotten a 98 M3 with no warranty. i feel i made the right decision.

my friend picked up a bimmer at an auction and all it needed was an exhaust, unfortunately BMW parts are ludicrously expensive and an exhaust cost him $1200 through our local dealership. if you can find a 95-99 M3 or 540i with less than 60K miles and in the price range you are looking at you'll be very very fortunate.
is there a specific price range you're limiting yourself to?

a 528 is not like getting a c class benz, its still a luxurious car, now if you were to get one of those 3 series hatchbatch bimmers, then that would be comparable to a c-class which also in my opinion is a mercedes for those who want to just say they have a benz without compensating much.

Why don't you consider finding a clean 88 Audi 4000 Quattro 5spd. & put a 20v 5cyl turbo motor in it. The car will be very very reliable, super fast, handle extremely well, look great, semi-cheap to maintain & be unique. Just my 2 pennies. Oh ya, and the insurance will be cheap as hell.

Thats ok, I just thought you were working on some kind of budget. I just figured that you could have a pretty nice car for around $6,000 to $8,000. And that would be a finished vehicle. No need to be replacing parts for a very long time. And if you have ever see one, you'll notice that they are very roomy inside, but maintain that small look from the outside. Just trying to help out alittle, hope you find something you enjoy.

My friends mom has a 528i and my friend from high school just bought one. My friends mom has 40k miles on it, she takes it in for electrical problems every month or so, the reason she got it in the first place was because she had a 1994 540i, it was a lemon and BMW gave her the 528i in 1998, now the warranty has been over for a few years and just last month she had to replace a faulty seat belt sensor, I thought it was like 30 bux, it was 500 somthing. Don't get the BMW. It has class that the maxima does not, but it also costs so much money to mantain.

Nice color. But it will take some time to make this look any thing respectble. I guess Clear corners (01 style headlights), red clear rear tails, nice rims, M5 spoiler etc and you should be set.

Check out my friend's 01 525i: http://www.cardomain.com/id/bimmerz

nice bimmer. is it a stick? i doubt its any faster than the max, if not slower. for sure you need to do the 01+ conversion on that thing and make it an M5 replica, its gonna be sweet

I love the 01+ 5 series. mad sexy !
