I am 18 yrs old and lookng to buy my first Maxima and I just found out that it would cost me $3700 a year!!! to insure a 1997 Maxima with full collision. My parents are making me get full coverage because they belive that it is "when" not "if" I will wreck the car. Any suggestions on companies or anything else. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Try Progressive. They seem to have a good price and have the ability to tell you their competitors rates.

Ur gettin schemed on.

Thats outrageous. Is it your own policy? If so F that and get on your parents policy. That will only cost them like $1200-$2200 a year for full coverage if they are in good standing.

I have my own policy cause I got dropped off my parents when I totalled my blazer and got a DWI for it. Six months after the accident, I am paying $3600 a year for just liability!! Not to mention $90 a month for state fee and $1000 a year surcharge, both for two more years.

Shop around. You definitely shouldn't have to pay that much unless you have as many points as me.

Oh yah, dont drink and drive.

I thought my 1700 a year for full coverage was high. I'll be moving soon, so hopefully I'll be able to get cheaper insurance because it's farther away from the city.

$3700 sounds about right for a first time male driver under 25... at least... that's close to what they quoted me for full coverage.

I'm paying $2500 for liabilty only here in NYC with Progressive. But my thrd year of driving is coming up and even though I'm under 25, hopefully I can get Geico to cover me and my rates will be lowered a lil.

I'm under my parents and it's pretty redicuous. That problem is the car. If you want cheap insurance, get an 1990 sentra . Just deal with it.

$2400 a year for me, but I'm like in the most accident prone city in the world, San Antonio, where no one knows how to drive.

If your financing the car, you have no choice in the coverage level - it must be full.
Given your age, and the car, that rate is not suprising. You may be able to get a bit less, but not much. If you have a perfect record, check with Geico or Erie. They both provide great rates, but only if you have no more than 1 violation.
I'm 31 and pay $675/yr for my max with Erie insurance - full coverage.

$49

$49 per month for everything: liability, collision, comprehensive, uninsured vehicle. That's because I am a grown-up with a clean driving record, living in a small town.

A month? Is that a typo?

Once you turn 25, your rates drop significantly. It also helps if you live out in the boonies (or at least your insurance company thinks so)

Actually, even in DC, I'm only paying $56/month.

I am 19 and my insurance is $2400 a year through State Farm under my parents policy in Maryland. I dont pay for it, but it is full coverage. $500 collision deduct, $0 comprehensive deduct. $300,000/$500,000 liablity, $100,000 property, $250,000 un/underinsured. And road side assist. When I turn 21, the rates will drop and I will no longer be able to be on my parents policy.

The advantage of state farm, is that their motorcycle rates are extremely cheap. For a 2001 model 500-699 CC bike for full coverage and $50 comprehensive is $528 a year.

My suggestion

Shop around. Even with the same insurance company, different agents give different quotes because some agents is more willing to take the risk. Here is why.

I was 22 when I got couple of accident at my fault. My insurance company increase my premiun every three months (for a '89 Mazda 323), up from ~$400 to almost ~$2000/6-month (I think they consider me as high risk and want to force me to go away). As a poor student, I decided to stop the insurance and took the bus.

Couple months later, I got more cash, so decided to shop around. Got the following quotes:

1. All States: doesn't want to insure me or ~$3000 for 6-month
2. State Farm agent #A: $2600 (6-month)
3. State Farm agent #B: ~$600 (6-month)

From that experience, I know it is up to the agent to give you discount, like good student discount, good driving record.. etc.

TIPS

On how to have lower insurance...

1. When they ask you how many miles a year you drive say about 5,400. If you are higher risk anything 6,000 or over hikes up your insurance. Companies such as Geico ask you how many days a week do you use the car for school/work and about how many miles ONE way. Do the math before you call to get about 5000 miles and say that you don't use the car for anything else. They are asking u for an estimate mileage so ESTIMATE.

2. Rates are cheaper if you don't have a fixed schedule. eg. to and from work/school. If you can say that u use your car for pleasure do so and the same miles...about 5,400.

3. Geico also has a Good student discount It's like 20% off. Only use if you say u commute to school. they also have a discount that they never mention. National Miltary Families Association. NMFA anyone can join, it costs about 12 dollars. Only sign up ONCE and you have the Geico NMFA discount for the time that u are with Geico. And that is also about 15% also.

4. Geico is good if you call their 800.841.3000. Its a call center so there are no agents, and they follow a format for insurance. So there is no agent trying to sell u something or some insurance u don't need.

I pay about $65 a month on my 2k i30 for collision, comp, and liability with State Farm.

I also carry an additional liability policy to protect me above the limits of the first policy and I pay about $12 a month for that.

Wow...I work as a marketing manager for an insurance company and I can tell you that you are being taken for at that price---$3,700.

Picture this: ME! I have a 95SE, one High Speed ticket(oooops) and that's it. My insurance with 1,000,000 limits on liability/, per occurance with $5000 medpay, costs me $84/MONTH! I am not with the company I work for due to my age; 24. Progressive got my vote...don't tell though

Many people think Progressive is NON-STANDARD auto and will hurt you down the road when you record clears or you age increases and you try to go with a 'real' company. That was the Progressive of the mid-90's. Now they have similar AM-BEST ratings on their auto as Geico, Westfield Companies, Cincinnati Insurance, State Farm, Erie, indiana....etc.

My point? Go to Progressive and get a quote. Anymore your rate is based off of your credit score. If you have a ton of credit cards open...close them. Your score is based on your ABILITY to get into debit...not so much about how MUCH you are in debt, but what you COULD get into. I.e...if you have 5 cards with 100k limits you are worse off than the guy who has one with a limit of 10k and has 8k on it BUT pays his bill EVERY month on time!!! Weird, huh?

The underwriter has three tools. The Credit score weights the most of the decision, then you driving history and age, car....and finally how long you have been with a company.

Most folks are surprised that you can save ~15% on your policy by being with a company for at least 2 years...still more if you have your home/apt. with them too!!!!

Email me if you need more help...I am positive I can find you cheaper insurance!!

Insurance premiums also depend on where you live (high risk in carjack or low risk), your DMV record, gender and age.. I'm in central NJ, just got my 97 Max in Dec 2000. Full coverage for my car ranges $1400-$1800/yr (depending on Insurance Company). I just went with liability, $640/year for me. You're 18/male... it's gonna be steep, but definitely NOT $3700/yr. You're being taken for a ride.

If you're looking for low premiums, try calling 'local' insurance agencies OR have your parents insure the car with you as secondary driver. Companies like Progessive, Geico don't offer coverage in certain areas and/or certain age groups (like us), that's why they're able to offer lower premiums than other major insurers.
Good luck

not to burst bubbles but that magic 25 age only applies to married males and females. if you are single your rates don't drop until your 30. sucks, huh? the main thing that affects rates, like others have said, is your age. my insurance is actually cheaper on my '01 max than it would have been on the '96 i was looking at. the reason, more safety features. imports are going to cost more regardless b/c it costs more to get parts and to get them fixed. definately shop around and then stick with the same company if at all possible. your rates should decrease every time your policy is renewed, but you won't notice big drops until you get married or turn 30.

I dont think i can help but dont feel bad. My insurance for me on my 99 max w/ NO points and full coverage just tips the scale at 5g's. Now... my name is on my 92 max and it is $2400 no points. My insurance is still goin up (dont know why, have been clean for 1.5 years now..knock on wood!) and it was over 7g's now. Dont ask how many points are on my insurance. Let's say i am well over the double digits and the first number is even. Surcharges dont help me either.

Basically

It's a group that sponsors Geico. If you are are member of NMFA they would tell you that you can save with Geico insurance, but Geico wont tell you that belonging to them, you could save. You just call them (nmfa) up and tell them you want to join. You pay 12 or 13$$ over the phone and thats it. They send you a newsletter and you don't have to buy or renew. Just join once. And that discount stays on forever. If anyone wants I can find the number.
And at Geico, 25 is the magic number. Even better when u get married.

I used to work for Geico.

703) 823-NMFA (6632) is the number. It was 12 or 13$ when I worked there, might wanna just double check. As for tips, I posted some of the obovious ones. They offer discounts to lots of groups i.e educational, credit unions, gov., CPA groups, you just have to tell them you belong to a group and they will see if they offer a discount...I know someone that still works there and I will ask if there are any other tips.
