hey guys. here's the latest email from msds:Eddie, thank you for the header link !

"Eddie, thank you for the header link !

If in fact msds is to commence on this new header design, there are some preliminary things that we usually check out. Perhaps some of your knowledgeable board members would look into this. The friendly guy with the microfische in the Nissan parts dept. is where we start:

For the following years of Maxima / 6cyl. 1995 '96 '97 '98 '98 '99 both ATX and MTX we need to know the pn's for the Front and Rear manifolds ( and if these are "Precats").

We need to know the pn's for the Y-Pipe, both ATX and MTX for same years.

We need to know the pn's for the EGR tubes, both ATX and MTX.

Also , how many O2 sensors are on the manifolds/ Y-pipe/ main cat.

The above data would be needed by us to determine all of the variables (if any) , in consideration of possible mfg. of the exhaust headers.

Once we gather this data, we will more than likely need to get under the hood of a local members car for a detailed look. From there we usually prototype a few different designs, road and dyno test for the best result, and then produce the goods.
Prototypes usually require a donor car for approx 2 weeks, so if we use one of your members cars , they will get the first set of headers at a huge discount.

BTW, These are only installed/ sold in California for "Off road competition use only" and are NOT emissions legal. "

so there you have it. anybody have the info they need? if so feel free to e-mail them or me and i'll pass on the info. hope this helps.

Well...looks like Kalab or Wic would have to help out on the part number part. Unless, someone is really tight with their parts guy at his local Nissan dealership. The exhaust manifolds might be the same for 95-99, but I know the rest of the exhaust system is different.

95-96 Fed. spec.
95-96 Cali spec.
97-99 Fed. spec.
97-98 Cali. spec.
1999 Cali. spec.

I got a feeling the 1999 cali-spec people are going to get left out. 1999 cali-spec shares the same exhaust system as 2000 cali-spec.

Here's what I can provide you with:

Front Exhaust Manifold
14006-31U00 : 1995-1999 ALL but 1999 CAL
14006-4L700 : 1999 CAL

Rear Exhaust Manifold
14004-31U00 : ALL

Balance Tube (I think this is also the Y-Pipe)
14012-41U21 : 1995-1998 CAL and FED
14012-55U00 : 1998-1999 FED

EGR Tube
14725-40U02 : 1995-1998 Auto
14725-40U03 : 1995-1998 Manual
14725-4L600 : 1999 ALL

EGR Guide Tube
14713-40U01 : 1995-1998 ALL
14713-4L600 : 1999 ALL

Front Exhaust Tube (Y)
20020-4L800

California Front Catalyst
B08A0-4L700

And some fiche shots that I've enhanced for you guys:
EGR for 1999
EGR for 1995-1998
Manifold and Y for CAL
Manifold and Y for FED
O2 Sensor for CAL
O2 Sensor for FED

Hope it helps, you're welcome

I think I would ask about the $$$$, it could run $1500 or more (even with your huge discount). I'd also ask about hp gains.

this one doesn't sound to optimistic.

"Eddie, thanks for the needed data. I will review these with my techs here at the plant.
I was hoping for one style F/R header /Y-pipe with one style EGR...however this does not seem to be the case with the '95 to '99.
Due to the nature of CEL activations when not properly adhering to each specific /year change to the O2, EGR, and Cat, it is most unlikely that a "One style fits all" set of headers can be made for your entire engine family application.
This equates to at least 4 ( maybe 5) different stlyes of header groups.

With the contour/ mystique/ cougar Duratech, we build one style F/R header and 2 styles of Y-pipes, for a range of '95 thru '01 family of cars. That development program "Only" cost us $ 7,500.00 in set up.
So you can see what 4 or 5 stlyes are going run in "Set up" costs !
Keep the faith... we will check out your Maxima data and quickly get back to you.

Regards, Martin msdsinc."

If we want to save costs, tell him to reconsider this situation, the 95-98's (98 Cal, not FED) all share the following:

Front: 14006-31U00 : 1995-1999 ALL but 1999 CAL
Rear : 14004-31U00 : ALL

EGR Guide Tube: 14713-40U01 : 1995-1998 ALL

EGR Tubes:
14725-40U02 : 1995-1998 Auto
14725-40U03 : 1995-1998 Manual

For 95-98.CAL, we should be able to make a one-size-fits-all bolt-on.. auto vs manual should not make a difference. (Far as I know, which i must be honest to say isnt much. )

Just a guess/thought.

My question is this. How much of a gain does MSDS think we will get? I know with quite a few aftermarket headers out there, they are fairly long, usually running down and under the engine. (Honduh) from looking at our headers, they are quite short from what I have seen of them. would the gains be worth the price?

Too bad each model year is diff. If the header design would pass emissions then I'd be interested. Just got my Q1 bonus!

Bumping this thread to the top again.

I spoke to the dude at MSDS on friday asking if he would need a 5th gen prototype, again, he said we needed to do some more preliminary research. I told him that we have 2 precats in the exhaust manifolds, one for each bank, one of which is eliminated by aftermarket y-pipes with no problem, our O2 sensors are located in the cat, before the cat in the y-pipe, and i don't know where else. If anyone has the part numbers for the parts mentioned by 95greense, then by all means please post them. I want to try to get the 5th gens in on this too! =)
