which engine is smoother and quieter 4th gen or 5thgen 3.0 liter
hmm well the internal volume of the combustion chamber multiplied by the weight of the crank shaft divided by the spring rate of the valve springs equals VQ30DE-K
same engine in both cars, I don’t believe there would be any difference at all
I could be wrong, 5th gens are drive by wire while 4ths are cable

Both are similar with 5th gen probably edgeing out a bit due to it's slightly newer design, but once you start adding stuff, I/Y/E, they tend to not be so smooth anymore.
And I think 3.5 5th gens were drive by wire, not the 3.0, as he asked about. I could be wrong though.

vq30de-k's could be smoother and quieter from the inside if the 5th gen has more sound deadening material. And also considering the fact that the de-K is a relatively newer engine. Really hard to tell and not that it really matters.
as for smoothness, the two engines run different IM's, which could affect the overall "smoothness" in the powerband.

The MEVI has the same exact characteristics. Smoother powerband and a smoother and more refined sound.

It was smoother everywhere from idle to redline. The 00 IM is smooth on the inside like it was extrude honed because its plastic and not cast aluminum.
Also there is a spot in the lower 00 IM where it is polished like glass stock on the 4th gen it is rough casting all the way thru.
Next time at the track ill put the switchover at 5000-5200 rpm as dave suggested instead of 4700 rpm and a few other minor things and maybe ill run a 12.9 on street tires NA.

hahahaha helllz no my 1992 S13 with a KA34DE which is a truck motor was not smooth. nice little motor but by no means smoothe
Its hard to tell but from the inside but from the outside the 95-99 are quieter than the 00/01's, the muffler's exhaust on them makes less noise. I have noticed this several times where the 00/01's have a sound to them by the exhaust pipe while accelerating the 95-99's make no sound by the exhaust pipe while acclerating.
