The AE transmission
Is the Viscous LSD a good LSD? Basically will it work like a quiafe LSD or is it different? Is it worth trying to find a AE transmission or just stay with the 95-99 transmission?

I figure any LSD is better than an open differential. You could also look for an I30 5-speed, I believe they came with a VLSD as well.
5th gen transmissions are supposed to be stronger with a stronger 3rd gear and I think better differential bearings. I know the LSD is not as good as a quaife but it is better than open. A regular 5th gen tranny will cost about the same, maybe a little more, than a 4th gen but is more reliable and stronger for boosting purposes. I personally would try to get a quality aftermarket LSD (quaife, kaaz, Vitek? not sure about this one) but if my tranny went out then I would get a 5th gen one.
I thought Viscous LSDs were used more for the differential for AWD cars between front and rear wheels.

It may be a VLSD, but I think that the I30/Canadian Maxima is clutch type correct?

All the LSDs offered in Maximas/I30s in North America were VLSDs until the HLSD came out in 2002.
