Almost died tonight, thanks to a pothole and a cracked rim *PICS*

So I'm driving home on the expressway and it's raining pretty steadily since we're getting what's left of Jeanne. I'm doing 60 mph in the middle lane (speed limit 50, unofficial speed limit 65) and people were passing me and I'm talking to my friend on the phone when all of a sudden **BAM** I hit a pothole. Now I try and avoid potholes at all costs because of my wheels, but since it was raining I did not see it.

Right after I hit it I was launched into the right lane where THANK GOD there was no car, but I thought there was so my heart was pounding. I hear thump, thump, thump, and tell my friend I got a flat and hung up. Took out my trusty mag flashlight and got check the wheel. I see that it's flat, but upon closer inspection, it's cracked in half, ALL THE WAY AROUND!

My dad came and brought one of my 17's, changed it and drove very carefully home. While I was pulled over I saw a lot of cars with their hazards on in front of me, and then someone pulled in front of me. She had gotten a flat also. A tow truck pulled in front of her and told up that 5 other people had gotten flats also. So I filed a claim against NYC and called 911 just to back my a$$ up. Hopefully they'll pay for the replacement rim.

Here are the pics:

Back to the 17" Momo's tomorrow morning. Oh well. At least I'm alive.

Holy Crap that rim is messed up. Glad no one got hurt, it sure was raining cats and dogs. Hopefully you'll get a replacement free of charge.

Damn, I was in a similar situation....only it was a TOW TRUCK hook w/ the "come-along" hooked up to it. My sis got 2 flat tires, and 4 otehr cars got at LEAST 1 flat tire.

HOLY BUCKETS!!! Dude, that wasn't a pothole - that was an open manhole, or a sinkhole!

I was driving on the Northern State Pkwy to my brother's house today around 4PM. I was in the middle lane, about a mile and a half before the Glen Cove exit and Meadowbrook entrance, I see a car in first lane jump right in front of me (to avoid something). Then I noticed a white Pontiac Grand Am (exactly like this one: http://www.jandeautosales.com/Comple...Grand%20Am.jpg) with sparks shooting out of its front...and a tire rolling right past it. I was in awe. I slowed down thinking I may have to help the person out, but he/she managed to pull off into the curb and a few cars in that lane stopped and helped out.

Craziness. Further down on the Meadowbrook I saw a white Mazda6 hatch that drove off of the road and smacked a tree head on; caused a lot of traffic. Too much chaos in one day...

wow, that is a nasty crack, good thing you are alright and no one got hurt. where were you driving on? im in ny too, and i know the rain was horrible earlier tonight, i couldn't make clear the road too, but i know the roads i drive on are in horrible condition, full of bumps, holes, and cracks. so i don't usually go that fast on those, especially if i can't see the road clearly and it is covered with water. so you were talking on the phone huh? hope it was hands free, anyway, hope everything works out

Yesterday on my way to Hooters, I saw a Kia (Killed in Action) without a rear passanger wheel....why do cars seem to loose their wheels in the rain?

Thanks everyone. I was on the Staten Island Expressway headed towards the VZ bridge a little before the Bradley Avenue exit. If it's not fixed by now then this city really sucks ***.

The wheels are HP EVO Lightning, but I think that it was mostly the pothole because of how many other people with thicker tires got flats also. When I was on the shoulder all you saw in from of me was hazard lights.

Oh well. I guess it's good that I haven't sold the Momo's

Days like that, I make sure I have a full size spare tire in my trunk.

A crack like that, the hole must be the diameter of the wheel.

Good thing nothing happened. But I think its the rims, that shows not a strong build at all. Good luck with the city thing, I heard its a long process.

I seen the spoke part complety broken off the rim part from just hitting a curb. I never seen the rim section cracked in half like that though. I'm glad he was okay and he didn't loose control and total the car.

I have seen alot of cracked rims but DAMNNNNN!! I hit a pothhole that souunds like the one you hit but i popped 2 tires and barely bent the rim. I know the feeling cause it wasn't the first time and yeah mine was in the rain as well cause i am the same way and try to avoid all potholes at any cost and i have been known to cross into oncoming traffic to avoid them!!!

I was only able to put on two of my old rims because one of the lug nuts is not coming off. But I drove the car up the block and the alignment was pretty much fubar'd. Gotta go to the mechanic's tomorrow to see if anything is broken in there. If so, I'm gonna get it fixed, sell all the mods and get a new car. I'm not gonna deal with a fubar'd car.

The more I think about it, the more grateful I am that there was no car in the right lane of else I would've gotten into a pretty bad accident. The road was so slick and covered with water that the two simply would've done me in. Not to mention that there are light poles ever 50 feet or so.

OMG, that is an ugly crack, sorry to repeat the obvious but wow.

I hope the city pays you, but there are soon many pot holes in NY.

Glad your ok, and no cars were next to you, that could have caused a bad accident.

you gotta love good ol' NY roads

but man that rims looks like it was ready to separate itself from the car... thank god your ok and so is your max. Im sure the state/town will pay for that rim to be replaced, they are usually good at stuff like that especially with a police report to back it up.

goodluck with that!

Good luck with the cliam...though I don't think you'll get any reimbursment....if i'm not mistaken, pothoiles need to be laying around for at least 24h before the city will acknowledge fault...

Similar thing happen to me coming off the GWB, onto the Crss Bx Xpwy...Chipped two stock wheels, replace one potenza, and got a bubble on the other....Port Authority of NJNY made nothing of it....

You're heart must've been in your throat.....GEEZ!!!....

I hate sh*t like that. I rammed at highway speed a bag full of f---ing cardboard a couple of months ago because some *** had it fall out of the back of their bloody vehicle.

thats the nastiest cracked rim i've ever seen. i've had 3 different sets of rims on other cars and they've all been bent or cracked at some point, but none have ever cracked completely in half like that. you're lucky the wheel stayed on the car and was able to keep control.

i'd actually send that pic to manufacturer or wherever you bought the rim from just to see what they say. that type of damage doesn't look normal at all no matter the size of the pothole.
