Chameleon paint is gonna be $$$$. I think its like $400 a pint or something, or maybe its $400 a quart. Either way, if you want your entire car repainted with that, expect to pay atleast $5000 id say.

This is more related to cars and a little hijacking but where do you get the paint that closest matches our cars?

you can get a match by looking at your paint codes inside your door panel.
im not trying for a match though... im looking for specialty paint. 400$ a quart is maybe a little too steep... Im looking for paint that cost at most 400$ a gallon.

Goto a place that sells paint, and have them mix it. Or you can goto the dealership and order the factory paint, and they can tint it to match your current paint on the car (since it probably has faded a bit).

Ok for my car, through paintscratch.com, a gallon of paint (JUST PAINT) is roughly $300/gallon. Clear coat is another $100, primer another $100. Now thats if you are doing it by yourself. And this is probably a cheaper grade of paint. So really, $400/gallon for paint is gonna be factory paint.

either get a house of kolor catalog or go to your local auto paint supply shop and pick a color from the book.

in no way a monitor can replicate the shine/glimmer/shade of a multi stage paint correctly.

that seems a bit expensive...I heard you can get normal color paint for about 150$ a gallon. Black is something real cheap like 100

there's cheap paint and high quality paint.

of course you can get cheap as dirt paint and pay $150 for it...then there's paint with the same color costing $400+. there are shops that can paint the entire car for $600 bucks (maaco special)...looks like crap.

i'm sure the paintscratch.com is decent quality paint.

a pint of PPG DCU ran me close to 70 bucks. that's ONE PINT. the car is a 3 stage pearl paint...CH0...so i had to buy an additional midcoat of paint same deal with chameleon paints.

figure 2 pints of paint would cost $140. this doesn't include reducers, activators, primers/prep coats, and clear. if you want it look decent then use the right paint...or else it'll be the macco special.

Why not hop into yer Maxima and actually go and visit some custom body shops in your area (uh try yellow pages) and try striking up some friendly conversations with professionals that actually buy the type of products that you're looking for. Ask them what it would cost the average consumer to purchase what you want.

If ya really hate road trips like you say, then brouse the web for custom car painters and call them and ask about price ranges and how one can tell better quality paints from poorer quality ones.

Just my $0.02

You summed it up perfectly. That also doesnt include the tools you need for the job.

And keep going to the same place if you need any more paint. Remember most paint has to be mixed to make a certain color. There isnt really a Nissan QNO can sitting on the shelf. Danny pretty much summed it all up.... theres good paint like PPG and theres cheap paint that places like Maaco use. If your going for that chameleon paint theme, expect to shell out serious cash for good paint.. you dont want to buy cheap paint and get it nicked and scuffed.

there's actually a good body shop pretty close to my place...im a little reluctant to ask them questions though, cuz I know salesmen don't like it when you milk them for info for an hour than don't buy anything.

there seems to be a trend going here: house of kolor and paintscratch.com is good, and I should visit a local hw store.

one question: where can I go to see samples of the paint? I know you can go to a house paint place and see color sample cards, is there something like this for cars?

my dad was a mechanic, so people ask me why I don't just question him about what kind of paint to use. My dad also painted one of our cars with rustoleum and a brush....

house of kolor has a nice book of colors and etc. you need to find a local paint supply house and see. call first and see what they have.

PPG also has a nice selection of colors, pearls, metallics. if the place you go to does PPG then they can pretty much mix up anything you want. they should also have sample cards that you can see....just like when you buy paint for a house.

mechanic doesn't mean you're a body person. auto body is an art...usually you won't get someone that drops motors or changes timing belts to hold a paint gun steady enough to get a smooth finish.

paintscratch is decent (not sure what paint they use).
hardware store is a waste of a trip.
your local AUTO BODY paint supply house should be able to help you. get off your lazy **** and search.
