Worth the trouble? (Buying new max)

Hello to everyone. Kind of new to the site .

Was looking into buying a maxima and have been looking around on message boards etc. for performance parts and stuff, was planning on buying a 3rd gen 5 spd for about $3,000 but I ran into this one the other day.

It has 200k miles on it but has new timing chains and a new clutch.

Lots of body work to be done on it but I still think its worth it, I can also probably talk the guy down to like $4-500 for it.

Also what is it that is leaking under the car? looks like oil to me, for some reason I didnt smell it (wasnt thinking) but it has been sitting for about 4 months according to the seller, I think its just a really slow leak and shouldnt be a prob.

What do you guys think?

get a 4thgen, ive heard of them going for not much more than $3000. IMO that one looks a bit too messed up to even touch. Repairs are going to be alot, probably more than $2000 once its all said and done.

Have a mechanic check it out, but otherwise $500 for a car that actually runs is not a bad deal. That car looks like sh*t, however. To have it looking good again will cost you a lot, if appearance is important to you.

I dont want to get a 4th gen because of insurance, it would be like 250 a month for liability, and I dont have 3k .

And yes appearance does matter to me but I can do all the bodywork including paint myself for really cheap (I get paint for $60 a gallon) and I was planning on shaving the middle piece in the rear and getting a stillen kit or molding one. And as far as repairs, I could get a brand new engine for $800,plus I wanted to NA it and change out internals anyway. so even If I had to repair anything mechanical you guys dont think that (even after repairs) even if it exceeds $5,500, isnt a good deal for a 5 spd max built the way I want, with a new engine to put another 200k miles on?

I can do it, It will just take a while, im on a tight budget :P. I just need a car to drive right now really, would take care of the paint right away, everything would be under $300 for paint ( need to buy a new spray gun) thats another reason I want to fix it, it would be a fun project too. And I would get to show you guys what I can do :P even with a pos

edit: anyone have any idea what could be leaking?

that leak is in the rear, yes? did you look in the trunk?
if you just gave that car a nice washing it would look tons better. it does need a paint job, though.

I dont know man, that car really looks like ****, maybe it does just need to be cleaned but the car looks like it has been driven hard on and the inside is all messed up as well. Def get it checked by more than one mechanic cause there could be many things poss wrong with it.

if i could go back in time, i would get a more basic model. i went for the GLE(fully loaded version) but if youre going to want to upgrade it, buy the more base model (GXE or SE). in hindsight, i dont need the digital climate control and bose stereo... save money on the initial purchase price and then you have extra funds to do upgrades right away. if i were you, i would get a 4th gen. but if thats all you can afford, go for it.

.

The car does need a MAJOR cleaning I can tell you that, And the leak is in the front under the rear manifold somewhere.

I can tell from owning several ****ty cars that it has been driven long but not too hard, not nearly as hard as ive seen, the interior is in really good condition actually, the carpet under the gas pedal is torn/dug up like any car would be, theyre no tears in the cloth seats or the rear, the lining of the trunk is falling out but I always take that stupid **** out anyway.

I was worrying more about mechanical stuff etc. I want it to last at the LEAST 10-15k more miles till I can build the engine. but man for $500? maybe even lower?
