Attention- Those with broken Cattman Coilovers
#1
OK, this is directed to those of you who have had their Coilovers broken. I want to see just how many people actually had thiers break, and what did you do about it? More specifically, does everybody seem to be having the same problem or what. Since the gen 2 coilovers are not out yet, I am seriously considering buying them. I have some spare money left over, and now that I'm not buying a corvette or a trans am I might as well spend the money on the Maxima. I am choosing the coilovers for the following reasons. 1) I did a normal spring/strut install on my old camry and it was t-e-d-e-o-u-s 2) when I go to sell my car, I want to sell it stock, not all butchered up with aftermarket struts and springs (I never and will never unlower that old camry) 3)It is alot easier to put in and remove then the koni/sprint combo 4)I guarentee the Cattman coils will have more resale then a set of sprint/konis would, and I wouldnt need to find someone else to give me their stock suspension when I go to sell 5) All the spring combinations just dont lower the car as low as I would like it to go 6) adjustablity is what its about 7) this setup should be able to outhandle any conventional spring/strut setup 8) it seems to be a pretty good value as Konis themselves are $400-500+ for themselves alone, not to mention the cost of springs and camber plates.
So yes, I am quite sure I want the cattman coilovers. It should multiply the fun factor of the Maxima by 100x. So this breaking issue is very serious to me. If they do break, is it possible to have them rewelded? Just how many sets of broken coilovers are out there?

Eric,
The brokens rear struts are due to user error.
I broke both my rear kyb before I figured it out.
I do fault Brian for not "recomending" or stating the consequences of choosing differnt damping rates vs spring rates vs drop though.
The problem comes from the rear struts being damped too much. The coil compresses quickly and wishes to uncompress at the same quick way. If a strut/shock is set to damp more, it will uncompress slow. Therefore a light spring (275 to 375lb coil) will be fighting against the strut, especially when the car is extremely lowered.
Buy the set up, you'll enjoy the car more for sure. Not sure about 100x more though!! Just don't slam it and keep all settings near the middle settings.
hope that helps.

Interesting yes indeed. One of the main reasons I'm getting coilovers is the fact that I can slam the ever living F out of the car, and have good handling. The redesigned coils supposedly allow the car to be slammed without the risk of the shocks bottoming out.
I'll ask Cattman about this one, see what he says about broken rear coilovers.
I guess a rewelding job could be enough to repair the damage.
Another question, if the rears do infact break, how dangerous is it?

Think about this though, if you slam the hell out of your car and the car doesn't bottom, where is the wheel going to go? Shocks bottom for a reason, there is a limit to how far you can compress suspension before hitting something on your car with the wheels.
