Fact or Fiction... Turbo + NOS SI?
#1
I recently started a part-time gig at Best Buy for mod money and discovered that my coworkers are Maxima buffs too. One guy told this story that started like every other BS story "I have this friend that knows this guy..." and so-on.
The tale unravels and comes down to this. Some guy was running either an early 90's or late 80's civic that was "Beat To Hell!!!" and looked like a total sleeper. What people didn't know what that he had an SI engine running NOS and a Turbo. I told the guy it was bull****, he'd blow the engine. He responded with "doesn't matter, he races for pinks. The money he gets from selling the cars more than pays the cost of rebuilding the engine if it blows."
More BS spews and he tells me that the civic has beaten everything there is, including two, that's right, two Vipers on separate occasions.
It's my guess that this is a North East tale. I have little faith in the reality of it, however it spawned a question. Could an SI engine sustain enough structural integrity to make a few runs with NOS and a Turbo? Just a few runs for pink slips against more expensive cars should pay for a rebuild, right? At the very least, it's an interesting thought.

I did not know that

Sounds like B.S. to me...especially the part about the beating two Vipers...
But anything is possible...
I know FOR A FACT there are multiple Civics in the NY area that are putting down OVER 600 HP TO THE WHEELS...
And yes, they are sleepers...complete with 13" stock rims...
These guys are SERIOUS street racers...
You never know.
PS: A *stock internals* 99-00 Si motor can NOT handle turbo + nitrous....trust me i know from experience...I blew up a 2000 Si motor w/ only 8psi after 2500 miles.

i know a few people running turbo + nitrous on B16A blocks, they have built internals however. 2 running JRSC + Nitrous without built internals, one of these has been that way for more than 3 years. in the honda camp, building the internals is not uncommon, companies like arias, jg, je, crower, etc make pistons, rings, rods, etc. NuFormz has a blockguard that significantly strenthens the block. so yeah its possible, but its not common for an everyday driver to have.

sounds like fun
It sound like a killer home project. Take an old beat-up piece of **** civic or something close, do and engine swap and work it over hard to create the fastest sleeper car you can. Don't get me wrong, I want to work my Max up quite a bit, but I still want it to be a sedan to drive my family and friends around in.
I love to see people getting smoked by sleepers.

My $0.02
Wouldn't the nitrous act as a CAC within the combustion chamber? With built internals and low boost + low shot it seems possible. Those Honda/Acura camps have all those companies building mods. Sad to think my wife completely stock Civic has the possibility to whoop my a.s.s when it comes to bolt on mods.

most use the NOS to spool the turbo quicker so your not really going to gain more power theoretically.

The 2000 integra 1.8 L 195hp has a compression ratio of 10.6
Acura NSX - 3.2L 290 hp V6 is 10.2
Honda s2000 - 2.0L 240 hp I4 is 11
These cars can show gains with turbos. I may be wrong here, but this is what i see. I just recently heard of a NSX that got twin turbos.
