Is a test pipe worthwhile...

I will be purchasing a WarpSpeed Y-Pipe in the near future and would like to know if it would be worth the extra money to swap out the cat. converter with a test pipe while I am down there.

nope, unless u r FI. u wont see much gains and the little gains u see arent worth hurting the environment.

a test pipe is for dyno tuning with a wide band O2 sensor. Dont use it for daily use.

I've tested my testpipe at the track. And people who know me, know how consistant my times are since I'm heavily into bracket racing. People are usually right when they say it won't help much. I wouldn't recommend other people doing this b/c your exhaust will sound like crap, you'll hurt the environment, and you will lose low end power.

But, I have a testpipe on my car b/c I see a .08 to .12 gain in the 1/4 mile for only $35. That is the ONLY reason I have one. My exhaust does sound like crap and I did lose low end power.

Unless you're boosted, don't bother.

On a non turbo car, you'll see a few hp, and the exhaust will sound like crap. I swapped out my cat for a 3" test pipe (full 3" mandrel exhaust also) and picked up 34 whp on the dyno, but that was because I picked up a couple of pounds of boost that the stock cat was restricting. I had to add a resonator because my car was sounding so bad though.

I have a budget ypipe, budget straight pipe and greddy sp catback and my exhaust is quiet and sounds good. I did pick up a lot of extra lowend and midrange power becuase my stock cat was clogged after 100,000 miles.

Just installed my testpipe today. I have a 2.5" mandrel y-pipe, b-pipe, a Magnaflow resonator and a Apex'i Dunk muffler.

I only took it for a quick spin so if the ECU needs to adjust for any reason, it hasn't done so yet.

I didn't notice any gains on the butt dyno, high end or low end. On the same note, I did not notice any losses on the butt dyno, high end or low note. The exhaust has a minor leak I hear hissing from the test pipe, will tighten her and take for another spin later.

The sound is... horrible. It's definitely higher pitched, and very raspy. I dare say it sounds like a 1.6L Honda motor with a can on the end. Before my Maxima has a nice deep growl, very pleasing to the ears at all RPM. Now its flat out disgusting.

My $.02.

I have a straight pipe as well. I put it in after my cat died. Pieces were loose inside of it.
Ive noticed NO gain. Its paired up with a Budget Y and Apexi WS exhaust.
Mine isnt very loud though but it does stink! I think I have a small leak where it meets the b pipe. Ive tried like h#ll to get it to seal but I have had no luck.
OEM cat is definitly the way to go. Dont even consider a hi flow cat, if you have a aftermarket y pipe and the the 2 precats are removed the OEM cat is not very restrictive. Not enough to worry about.

Where did you get the 3" test pipe or did you make it?

I had it made, just took it to the same guy that made my 3" mandrel exhaust. But I think Thomas, SX7R sells 3" resonated test pipes.
