My brakes have been exposed to many Canadian winters and have taken a beating over the years. I was interested in redoing the whole brakes next spring. I'd keep the calipers but they are covered in years of brake dust and rust. Is it possible to sandblast them clean?

 

Sure...they are just cast iron. You should able to sand blast some of the rust off. After that, I would spray paint them with some high temp paint.

While you have them out, you may as well rebuild them. Though you could save a ton of time and buy remanufactured calipers. They are rebuilt stockers already sandblasted ready to go.

Yeah, you can but you have to disassemble them in order to do that. Might be easier to buy a G2 or Folia-Tec paint kit and use that. It comes out really nice.

 

Dont think you would have to, all you would have to do is mask the piston and bleeder. I dont think piston dust boot would be affected since they are subjected to extreme temps already being right on the brake surface.

I had to break down the calipers on my sister in law's Integra to get them powdercoated. To keep from powdercoating the parking brake spring and all that stuff we disassembled everything we could. In the end we couldn't get the rear pistons out b/c of the design so we just high temp painted them and they look exactly like the fronts which were powdercoated.

It's also good if you're taking the time to sandblast them b/c that stuff gets everywhere and you'll probably want to clean them up once they're done. I rebuilt the front calipers w/ rebuild kits from Acura and they were like $60 but the brakes work great and have held their color much better than my own painted calipers. The rears on the Integra have held up but they don't generate nearly the heat the front ones do.
