Um... okay.

Buy a 5-speed, autos are considerably slower, stock for stock.

yea, get a 5spd, i have an auto and i wish i gotten a 5spd, you can check the FAQs in the 4th gen forum for problems with 4th gen maxes, i think there were few minor problems for each year of the 4th gen, but overall, it is a great car!

Yea...i will miss the sound of Vtec. It is a 97 Base with 195hp 2.2 litre 4 banger. It is fun to drive but not much room in the backseat or trunk.

I agree with him ^^^^ - dont fall for nothing less than a 5-spd. They are great cars to drive and so much better and so much more fun with a stick rather than auto.
Just my .02 cents!

Awesome, you won't regret it. That's what I had before the Max, a 99 Prelude, that I traded her in for a 5th gen Max, and I did not regret it, for several reason. The suspension is way better set up than the prelude, the gas is better cuz the Prelude i was getting lousy gas for a four cylinder, which the Max get about the same but more power, and two extra cylinder, hehehe. Also the roominess in it. I was embrassed when I could fit an adult in the back seat in the Honda, but now I can get all three people in the Max.

You CAN get an auto then convert later on. Some members have done the conversion with about 72 hours of downtime.

Yeah you could do the conversion....but it can be quite a hassle if you haven't done something like it before. It's better off to actually find a 5-speed off the bat then try to convert.

If you enjoy driving manual transmissions, get the 5spd manual. If you like automatic transmissions, you'll have a much larger selection to choose from. The swap is expensive and requires a certain amount of mechanical knowledge - I wouldn't "expect" to swap over if I was you, but if you buy an automatic and its not cutting it, it is an alternative.

Get a 5 spd or you'll regret ever getting a max...

get the 5-speed.

dont get one with bose, it will have problems later down the line. just add a new stereo. dont get one with leather if you plan on upgrading the seats to sporty ones. just get the basics. like fog lamps, keyless entry, sunroof and STOCK spoiler. if you choose an SE, the gauges will be white, and the GXE,GLE are black. the 95-97's have roller style ODO while the 98-99 have the Digital ODO. the 1999 is the only one that has a chip on the key.

95-96 are the 4.0 gen and the 97-99 are the 4.5 gen. due to the upgraded looks. doesnt matter which one you get no real problems except for a recall for the 97-98 alternators. all year maximas have a knock sensor problem, and Ignition Coil Problems as well. $100 for the knock Sensor, and about $50 a coil. ~$300 total. the rest is labor. 1999 ones have the most problems with Ignition Coils. Simple expensive Fix. if you get a 1999 get a red one, its rare, but looks real good. ive only seen 1 red one that came with a 5 speed. a couple of people have done conversions.

if you plan on upgrading the tail lights to a red/clear style instead of the amber/red. expect to pay around $300 for 95-96 and about $100 for 97-99. i believe ecu's are available to all 4th gens now, so that shouldnt matter.

GOOD LUCK!
