do these things let you *change* or *tweak* any thing or is it simply for retrieving data/codes etc...?

Go to pepboys and get a scanner for like $40 after a mail in rebate. They have 3 or 4 and the cheapest is like $70 with a $30 MIR.

I still feel autera is best if you want a small unintrusive but effective device. If you want a superb setup that you can monitor all sensors at once, the Harrison is for you. I plan on swapping to the Harrison at some point but that will necessitate a big @ss monitor to be mounted on the passenger side. This makes the car that much less of a daily driver yet again.

If I go the computer route I'll be putting this PC in the trunk and permanentaly mounting a flatscreen monitor up front. Having a laptop mounted up front would basicaly render the pass seat useless. The PC I'm using at the moment is very old. Its pretty much obsolete for anything but playing music, going online and datalogging. It will go to waste when I get my laptop in June. It will serve perfectly as a large MP3 database(I have 7K songs) and datalogger. Also, I drove around for about two weeks with an old laptop hooked up for music in my car. The screen broke off from my harsh suspension.

You wouldn't be "mounting" the laptop anywhere. Just leave it on the passanger seat and have something hold it in place to make sure it doesn't fall and stuff. It doesn't have to be open for it to do it's job. If you have it set to monitor parameters you can just close it and check them when you get home. You'll still know what happened at what rpm and such. If you have a person in the passenger seat you can have them hold it for you. If it's a lady friend I doubt you'd give a rat's *** what is going on with your car as your priority is her, not the car.

Spend the extra ~$150 and get one that can give live data feedback.

My actron is GREAT.. if I had a PDA or laptop, I would have just gotten software and a connector

If I do a computer setup I will make in permanent because I want music and I would like to have it so I can view it while driving. And I do have a lady friend and she realizes that any time we are in the Max its because I want to go fast and have fun. And the way I drive it will take a fairly intricate device to hold it in place firmly on the seat. With a simple monitor I can bolt a plate through the floor and another through the exhaust tunnel wall. Then I can triangulate some square stock up toward where the monitor would be. This is good to say all this because I'm realizing how much of a PITA it will be. I think I'm just gonna stick with the Auterra and a few other gauges like boost, EGT, and fuel pressure. Maybe more if I can figure out a way to mount them without being ricey.

I know what a carchip is and it's nothing like the OBD software we are talking about. That is what you have right, the CARCHIP?

Custom enclosures, and attach them right in the middle of the dash, on top or maybe towards the top or put them in the headliner somewhere.

Well I've freed up a lot of space from removing the clock and soon sunroof. I'm going to make a piece that makes the clock area into a gauge pod. I think I might be able to fit four in there.

Well, if three can be fit in the DIN slot then I think four might fit in by the clock. The din slot is a full inch narrower than the available space up top.
