Altima header conversion
Altima header conversion
Allright well i know this has been discussed in a different thread but i thought i would post here and see what everyone thought. Right now i have a 03' maxima that i'm working on. All the cooling and wiring is out and i'm waiting on my front structure to come in next week so i can weld it on. I have been looking at pictures of Altima headers and comparing them to maxima headers. What i was thinking about doing is buying altima headers and modding them to fit. I work at a shop so I have all the tools and tons of help to get these to fit and i want to see exactly what it will require to make them work on a maxima. I just cant tell from the pictures and i want some cold hard evidence i can put my hands on. I dont know if it will require the y pipe to be designed different, which would be difficult i know, or if , like in the other thread someone said the only way to get them to work will be to modify the crossmember. My friend and I are willing to put a lot of time and effort into trying to make these fit on a maxima. I have tried pming around to some people that might have tried these or have experience with them but haven't got any response. I have just heard "no it won't work because it wont clear the crossmember" well i want to see for myself that it won't clear the crossmember and find a way that it will. If i am able to get these to fit and work then i also have a 97' max that i could try to fit some on for you 4th gen guys. If there is anyone who strongly believes i cannot accomplish this, and has first hand evidence, then speak up now and let me know it won't work. I also thought that if there was anyone wiling to donate to the cause so i can get the headers quicker that would be awesome. Nothing big, a few people, the more the better till i have enough, 5-10 bucks a person or whatever. There only 180 shipped on ebay but ill prolly upgrade the shipping to get them quicker. When i get them and if i am able to modify them to work i would refund everyones money back in FULL and also give a write up with tons of pictures. If i get them and fit them up and there is no way they will be able to work without heavy modifications then i would sell them to someone who owns an altima for like $140 and then split that money to everyone who donated. Ofcourse everyone would lose like maybe $1 or $2 but nothing big. Well worth the risk imo if i can get these to work. The only reason i am asking for donations is because i only have $50 in my paypal account and e-checks from my checking account take 3-4 days to clear, too long for me. I have been on the .org and plan on being on the .org for a very long time and i would never screw anyone over, expecially a maxima owner. i KNOW what it is like. I will promise a full refund to anyone that wants it if i can get these to work. If anyone has any doubts here's my cell 316-706-0366. Thanks. Any comments or suggestions are welcome. -Nathan Fisher
I would think as long as you can use everything to the 3 to 1 collector, you can easily mod everything back to fit. If the 3 to 1 collector dumps too close the x-member you are ice skating up hill. You should take a CLOSE look the pics Tilley posted before.
Honestly though, if you have only a few $ to you name, how are you going to afford the extra pipe, collectors, flanges, welding time etc.. to get these done? And let's say your successful. Then what? How would one determine if modifing a set of Altima headers is more cost effective than buying a set that fits in the first place? Or how will people determine if your modded headers perform better than existing ones? You will need to track it, dyno it, tune it etc... all costs $.

so theres no way i could get these to extend over the crossmember? if not we have tons of crossmembers maybe i could modify to fit. Oh and i have more than $50 i just meant thats all i had in my paypal account from a few things i sold. I have plenty of money in my checking account i just would like to get started on these headers before my structure comes in because then im gonna want my car put back together. It would take too long to send an e-check thru my account. I just took out a loan to fix up my car and will have plenty of money left over to mess with dyno and all the numbers. Thanks for the info ill look at tilley's pics again.

So are you saying that the headers will hang too low? couldnt i chop them up a bit and make them hang a little higher.
well i could get the cattmans but whats the fun in that. I like a good challenge.

Got a good deal on a set of test headers to test on my car so im gonna go ahead and get them. We will see by next saturday Exactly how much modding they will require. Gonna go ahead and use my CC so i get them earlier cuz for some reason whenever i order stuff through my checking account and paypal it takes like 3-4 days for it to clear.
Also the guy i talked to said they make a set of headers for 02-03 maxima's but they are shorter collectors so probably not as big of gains. Don't know why i've never heard of them tho

wow damn i just did an instant transfer from my checking account. Why have i never been given that option before? Gonna start buyin more stuff now great. Anyways headers should be in by wednesday so by saturday hopefully i will know whats up. Thanks for the help everyone...ha
dude honestly you are in for a world of hurt. The header install in itself sucks not to mention doing what you are planing on doing would make it three times worse. Just get a set of hotshots and call it a day. You will be kicking yourself in the a$$ when you are trying to modify all of that $hit. $550 for the gains you will get from the hotshots will be more than worth it in the end
Personally I say, just talk the people who are paming them for the Altima make them for the Maximas. Theres PLENTY of interest on here alone to make it worth their while to make them. Just DONt say anything to mthem about Cattmans cost. They'll jack up the price to 3 times what they're charging for the Altims just cause they think we're dumb enough to pay for them....

The altima ones have long collectors. The ones they make for the maxima are shorter headers. which makes a Big difference. The guy i talked to said he has only sold one set for the maxima and he hasnt heard back from that guy. he also prety much told me they were garbage.
Unless you are willing to completely redesign the headers (would be better to start from scratch), then you will just be making the Altima long headers into the crappy maxima short headers when you are done. Killing all the benfits you wanted from the Altima headers. Not sure if that is clear to you are not but IMHO that's what would have to happen.
