Sell or not to sell...

Well with gas prices for premium getting rather high, and me finishing college, the idea of selling the maxima has come up. I will have to start to pay back my student loans soon and the extra money from the sale would help with that.

I was thinking of a Nissan 200sx as a replacement for the maxima, like a 1997 or 1998 SE or SE-R. Good gas mileage and fun to drive. I am also getting tired of having a car that seats more than 2 people comfortable with friends *****ing about getting a ride.

Any suggestions?

Well the difference b/t the sale of the maxima and the purchase of the 200sx is my main goal. A 200sx is selling for a bout $4500 - $5000 right now.

You expect to get more from the Maxima, how much more? Seems like the transition costs would eat everything up and you'd be back to the $200 savings in regular unleaded.

If you want an SE-R, go with the classic model. (~1991-1993). They are quick, light (2400lbs) and dirt cheap to buy/repair. My friend just replaced his engine with a 275 dollar JDM SR20DE. They're also easy to turbo, as the japanese version of the SE-R had a stock turboed engine (Nissan Bluebird).

I'm sure you can pick one up for less than 2000, or you can find modded/turboed ones for around 5000. Total sleeper cars, IMO.

Dude the car market in Richmond VA is ridiculous!! I could sell my max to some fool for about 9 or 10k. Cars are WAY over priced in Richmond, VA.

I kinda wanted a 2-door car instead of 4 -doors, but how good are the older altimas??

they all have timing chain tensioner issues. just like the 240sx which shares the same KA24de motor. i would go with an old sentra P11 chassis and throw in an SR that would own all. my friend ainsley has one and its fast as hell. if the cars are way over priced in VA wouldnt the 200sx be way over priced as well or are u gettin a good deal on one?

The one I found is outside of Richmond, about an hour away. 1998 SE-R 5spd, fully loaded w/ the bose radio. 110,000 miles for I think $4800 or so.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the maxima and it is a great car, but gas is just dinging me very hard right now. $25 for 10 gallons of gas really hurts.

I would like to stay awway from civics and such, trying to find something a lilttle different.

if u can get 9 or 10k for your car more power to ya but 4800 for a se-r with 110k is pretty crappy to be honest with you. That is really no deal at all

keep in mind, that 9 or 10 is private sale. I already looked in the paper and such to price them out

get an ek/eg hatchback civic for 3000, then go for either b16 or b18 swap for 2000, get intake exhaust suspension and 15"s for 1000, install a flip-tv for 1000, basic weight reductoin, and ur car will run 13s, out-handle most cars, get 30mpg+, and cheap insurance all day.

Reliable, cheap insurance, and simple to work on.

I am NOT putting the maxima down in any way. I just need something with better gas mileage and I am sick of autotragic transmissions.

believe it or not insurance on a civic was going to be more expensive than insurance for my max due to it being the most stolen car in america

Insurance is such a slippery d*ck industry anyway. Nothing suprises me anymore that comes from them.

There is something wrong with this picture. Get your priorities straight. You have had a Maxima as a student and now you want to make like a martyr and take a step back in vehicle quality and focus on paying off your student loans. What interest rate are they at? I would make sure I kept all credit cards current and pay those loans off over as long as possible.

Are you graduating from college? Presumably you can find suitable employment, keep the Maxima, and start saving for your own digs.

I would keep the Maxima and just try and drive it a little less to save on gas. At least when you can get out on the open road you're driving a real car!

Just remember that an sx is 2 doors, which will probably classify it as a sports car, so the insurance will be more for the sx than the maxima. My friend has a 98(?) 240sx, and his insurance is more expensive than mine from the same company. We're the same age and both have clean records.

I have zero credit card debt or any other kind of debt as well. Finding good employment is not as easy as you think right now... especially with a finance degree. Maxima is a good car and I do try to drive my motorcycle when I can to help save on gas too

My experience is in accounting b/c of my last job as a staff accountant. The only problem with that is accouting does not interest me at all. There really aren't many finance jobs in VA that appeal to me though. Lots of accounting stuff, but slim pickings on finance stuff, unless you LOVE sales.

You don't want to give your friends rides take out all the seats except the driver seat. That right there is 75-85lbs. Then drive only with 5-7 gallons in the tank. All that together is 160lbs+ of weight reduction. That will save you a good amount of gas. If your friends still want a ride tell them there is some space in the trunk, but they will pay for gas.

My good friend...I just thought of that yesterday! Remove the back seat and call it a 2-seater from now on. I actually have really cut back on my driving as much as I can, and when I run errands I try to consolidate.

finance jobs are very scarce right now everywhere, not only in Richmond, VA. Try fin services industry. There's Wachovia in Richmond, there's a chance you could get an entry-level position paying mid 20's-low 30's. Also, try banks and brokerages.

I'd keep your Maxima not because being a fan of such but because of other reasons. It is very stupid to rid of the newer and more reliable vehicle (1999 GLE) for an older, less reliable, ugly looking POS. The used car market in your city is not that overpriced, first find that fool first who will pay 10 grand for your car. Feeling sorry that your friends are always asking for a ride- ask them to throw in a few bucks to help you out with gas!

You're a finance major, then run a spreadsheet, and do the math. Your Maxima should average 23 mpg. A 4-banger will get you 28 mpg, a high-performance 4 banger like an SE-R, or Teg, will give you 25 mpg. Basically, you're going to get more of 7-8 grand for Max, and pay 5000+ tax, tags, inspection, needed repairs, and at the end you will save maybe a grand, but will end up with a 12-yr old vehicle...Sell the bike

dude, as a staff accountant you can pay your bills while looking for finance related job. Right now to get into finance you gotta have an edge: MBA from the top school. Gotta be realistic about that. In fin svcs the only way to make money is in sales, operations jobs do not pay a lot.

Even though my maxima has 118k on it, it has NEVER let me down for something stupid. A lot of my friends looked into working at Wachovia securities, but they are on a hiring freeze now. I am looking into some of the smaller banks right now, such as my local credit union etc. They are expanding their services and what not. I would probably have to start off as a teller, but they pay pretty good and it would get my foot in the door. I am starting to be a bit more optitmistic about it now, but it is just frustrating.

The bike is my therapy right now! I own it free and clear, and insurance is paid up for a full year, plus it does get 45+ mpg.

can't really have it both ways, your kind of therapy is not smthg ppl hang on to when in financial hardship. I had a call from Wachovia Securities in Richmond like 2 mos ago even though I'm in Baltimore...

Wachovia is OK, my buddy works there and makes nice bank. But he is a higher level advisor.... You obviously know nothing about Richmond

Have you looked at Capital One in Richmond, lots of opportunity there. I would also check the Innsbrook area as I know there alot of financial jobs in that area, my company has our sales office in that complex. Richmond has a good job market you just have to look for it....If you go to VCU you can also check the career center as they help with job searches as well....

Richmond is Gay...yes it is! Anyway, I did think about Cap1, but recently they have laid off a bunch of people, so it makes we very weary to work there. Do you have any suggestions for the Innsbrooke area as far as places to look for? I live on southside, so I know very little about the west end.
