Wheel Hop vs. Wheel Spin

What leads to either? Usually occurs when I punch the gas in 1st gear.

Why do I get wheel hop, yet other times I get wheel spin.

Thanks!

Wheel hop
Motor mounts, transmission mounts, worn shocks, worn springs

Wheel spin
engine TQ, not enough traction, WOT

Road surface will effect both of those also.

well if you punch it at 5 mph in 1st gear then you're probably going to be all over the place, there's really no avoiding that. I recently installed Energy Suspension's motor mounts and wheel hop is just about gone. You see the stock motor mounts have enough play in them to potentially give you alot of wheel hop where the Energy Suspension bushings are alot stiffer and almost force your tires to spin rather than hop.

The best method of preventing wheel hop is learning how to drive. A good driver can spin the tires the perfect amount until he gains enough traction to go WOT.
Sorry if I didn't remotely answer your question...

Road conditions have a fair amount of affect... on my old maxima the wheels would always spin and they never hopped, but on this one road where i work the wheels would always hop on it, and i tried it in my dads maxima too and they hopped. So it could just be the roads.

wheel hop is very different than wheel spin. Wheel hop is pretty violent you kinda bounce. you can tell the difference.

Wheelhop can go from a quiet, innocuous thump thump thump to a violent destructive BANG BANG BANG!!! I got the ES motor mounts in myself and it eliminated wheelhop the times I would get light or moderate wheelhop and reduced the violent wheelhop to light wheelhop. Great investment.

There are a lot of details to go into but wheelhop generally happens when you are right on the edge of complete loss of traction, while wheelspin is past the point where you begin to get complete loss of traction.

Yeah i get some of the Worst wheel hop ever i think, If i go wot from a stop the tires will spin for a while, and once i regain a little traction that will start to hop like a b!tch. Otherwise if i give it 3/4 throttle from a stop they will hop immediatly. I have new mounts to put on, but the best guote i got on a motor mount replacement was $200 labor for front and rear.

Yeah I have heard stiffer springs really help out too, perhaps even more so than mounts.
